Around here we find many advocates of free and open source alternatives to corporate software. Good to see projects that aim to make the switch easy for newbies like @switchingsoftware Yet a general problem of #foss software is the lack of user friendliness. No news, this is an old topic. This is what makes the switch hard for people used to commercial #software with strong UX. As a designer I want to help improve #UX of open source software. Where to start? suggestions?

@blub If thr device has internet access you could hand a Letsencrypt certificate with certbot for example.

@blub Well in that case I just proceed beyond the warning. Next time the browser doesn't ask. I tried to "letsencrypt"/the local ip adress without success. I also tried adding the selfaigned cert to trusted certs on os level. The warnings kept coming. Either way it is not a big issue to me since the untrusted cert is still a cert and ssl works. Also I don't see a huge security advantage when the device is local anyways.

Let's say I wanted to hook up a town with lots of #facebook #boomers on the Fediverse by creating a server, which platform would you recommend? #Pleroma? #Mastodon? #Friendica? Another one?

@realcaseyrollins I plan on federating. I want the community to be free of right extremists but offer a space for exchange and discourse.

@sky999999 Computers are not the problem. Surveillance technology is. Personally, I would not drive a car that has proprietary software and internet connectivity talkimg back to the manufacturer, or anyone. It is not a necessity. It is not a solution to real problem. Yes, cars get stolen and it is cool to be able to get them back. But with privacy already in place. A solution would be a multifactor process where the owner of the car is holding at least one of the factors.

@boscallian True, but this is the challenge. Right now I am not recommending Telegram for private communication. It's rather another social network with strong text and audio features. Not so much a messenger any more. And that's ok. It's just important to make the distinction.

@obsolete29 At this point I do not even care anymore. Ungoogled chromium is replacing ff in my routines. I hate being that guy but my relationship to ff is hanging on the single string of belief in diversity. It is the only reason I keep it around. Yes Google is alread too powerful, yes we should all be using ff. But it is not happening. FF reminds me of windows phone. It is in this state where it is still just useful enough to work for a minority of users yet brings nothing new to the table.

@PublicNuisance Graphene OS is basically all the good stuff aboilut Android without the bad stuff. Also it is so close to stock Android update cycle that it feels like a big corp premium experience despite being an foss project. It is almost too good to be true. Yet there it is. A secure, private android experience for the world to enjoy. GPlay support is coming too for those who still need it.

@pry DaVinci Resolve. Basic version is free but limited to 1080p export. Learning curve a bit steep but great inteo tutorials exist. Totally worth it. Oh and it runs on Linux.
