       @publius @landley more seriously: we can cherry-pick examples of experiments which can be reproduced. We can also do this for CS.We can also show examples of foundational ideas which (so far) have not been experimentally-verified, and that list is not limited to either CS *or* astrophysics.Moreover, reproducibility is a criteria for *experiments* and not for *fields of study in aggregate*, and the whole commentary to which I had initially replied is both silly and moot in the first place.

       @charlie_root @djsumdog @ryo I just wish we had better battery life.I understand why we don't, with the kernel really not having granular power management controls, but it's more than a nice-to-have for a daily-driver.

       @dcc @charlie_root @djsumdog @ryo while all of these things are great and I love them, having to carry around a bunch of spare batteries like a SINCGARS RTO is... suboptimal

       @charlie_root @dcc @djsumdog @ryo or if you use it for literally anything else for which one uses a modern mobile device.Want to navigate? Better be ready to swap out batteries.Need to look up useful information? Same.I *love* my Pinephone - but let's be realistic about what needs to improve as far as far management is concerned.

       @feoh The more, untagging numerik because it seems like the polite thingI reject that your example is specifically one of Capitalism maintaining critical infrastructure.The research which was conducted to identify causation of this specific disease - and *research* more generally - is primarily undertaken using public funding. Later clinical trials for efficacy are, it's true, undertaken in large part with pharmacorps bearing the direct monetary expenses, and of course manufacture, same.

       @feoh cont'd all of which adds up to a pretty strong case for some flavor of socialism (though not directly or obviously anarchism). And the parts which are currently-handled by Capital, it's very clear, do not need to be conducted as expensively as they are.(more)

       @feoh I can ramble at length and with great specificity about pharmaceutical development, but I don't think that's necessary - the point is that what looks like Capitalism there is in fact Capital selling tickets to previously-paid-for public work.Like sitting in a folding chair at the beach and charge people to go swimming. This is not a different argument - it's thoroughly-similar, just simpler. The research has already been paid for.(more still, sorry)

       @feoh You start to see this pattern pretty much everywhere, and it is of course a meme at this point to call it out that 'oh that infrastructure we have deliberately decided not to maintain is no longer working- better privatize it' is the playbook for this kind of capture.

       @lowqualityfacts this is also why Kanban, Kaizen, Agile, and so on are popularly-believed not to "work": because *all* of them absolutely require management to have very sturdy discipline: they *must* trust the workers, usually over the manager's own judgement.Guess how many managers and executive leaders are prepared to actually engage with work this way?

       @john @Colman the results are... plausible text generation.It is trivial to demonstrate that the best-in-class models are incapable of simple reasoning, lack factual consistency, lack *internal self consistency*, and approximate truth through aggregation of textual volume.What "results" are impressing and exciting you, here?

       @john @Colman how about we make a deal:I won't tell you what you like or don't like, which I was already not doing, and you don't put words in my mouth because you want to argue with something that's easier for you?How do you measure results of what's"a pretty good search engine?"What matters to me is that results are factually-correct, not just some of the time, but within spring distance of all of the time. Most importantly, when I might not already have enough knowledge to evaluate the veracity of the provided answer.You may value other criteria where the metrics are better; what are they?

       @john @Colman Those *are* measurable.There is a large body of scholarship which shows that there is a vast and important gulf which exists between LLM answers which are factually-correct and answers which are plausible-sounding.This isn't a wholly-unknown space where nobody has been carrying out research.The factors that you describe here as being important to you are not only lacking from even the very best[*] LLMs which currently exist, the underlying technology of generative AI techniques provide no way forward as a field to improve them.[*] - loaded term here

       @john @Colman as a consequence of the above, when you ask about why the fediverse zeitgeist seems not to be particularly enthusiastic about genAI, at least three factors come into play:- the population of folks who read your question- the variety of kinds of criticism- the differences between your understanding of the field and the understanding of the respondents

       @john @Colman and that's the problem.Your question assumes sides.

       @john @Colman let's go back to your own example of eating or not eating meat.In that scenario, there are sides. You'd be mistaken to assume that there are only two, however, because the problem is more complicated than the question would imply.Similarly, your question here "bakes in" a large number of assumptions about a complex topic.Put another way: in order for there to be sides, you need to define a line.
