When things are pretty stable, having essential infrastructure, goods and services owned by for-profit entities is already a bad idea.But when things go bad, and people have needs that change at the drop of a hat, don’t have the choice, or resources to find alternatives, or time to look for them, or capacity to organise… that’s when it goes even worse. A cool thing about payphones in Australia: instead of getting rid of them because they are not bringing in money anymore, they kept them, made them free, + WiFi. Most don't use payphones often, but some will; and when we do need them, we are really thankful they are around.We _can_ do this: make useful things free instead of getting rid of them as soon as they are not bringing in dollars, wasting resources in the process.This is thanks to the USO consumer protection: https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/media-technology-communications/phone/phone-services/universal-service-guarantee-telecommunications/universal-service-obligation
