@chrisa @chris Which call? We haven't talked in ages. How do I reply to a reply? I don't understand Mastodon conversations. I just discovered your reply, which you apparently sent 3 days ago

I want to form a list of high-quality #covid and #covid19 virology, epidemiology, and public health info. (As in, people who do and read ongoing research and have the training to interpret it accurately.) How does one go about finding & curating such people?

Is there any guide to setting up a Mastodon instance? Started career as a s/w eng and architect. Am VERY comfortable w/ tech, but COMPLETELY ignorant about modern tools. Also, no time for a 50-hour learning curve just to do a single installation. (e.g. I don't know how to use GitHub, makefiles, Unix, Linux, brew, etc. None of it. A one-click install would be ideal.)

@sean @chris @jeff I'm going to give this a read later today or tomorrow. Quick question: since the "like" button here doesn't affect any kind of algorithm, I've been using the star button to mean "I've read this." So I've even starred messages that are just "Thank you" and stuff like that. Are there any conventions for that here?

It just occurred to me that despite its hardware infrastructure, Twitter is fundamentally a service business. SpaceX and Tesla are fundamentally manufacturing. In service businesses, it's generally the people who matter. Not Elon's jam. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/21/elon-musk-went-on-a-firing-frenzy-at-twitter-now-hes-paying-for-it

How come the one thing that these deci-billionaire man-children never spend their money on is a good therapist? #twitter #elonmusk #lifeskills

Recovery time is underrated. We have such a strong equivalent in American culture between "activity" and #productivity that I find it very hard to take enough breaks, even though I know it's good for me. Am considering re-reading The Power of Full Engagement, just to remember what it's like to #relax #recharge and restore #lifebalance.

Is my analysis wrong? Please rebut #union, #scabs, #rail, #strike:#Biden asks #congress to prohibit rail worker strike. Disallowing strike keeps workers only if they can't quit and go elsewhere. So they're not at the job because of job "market." They're there because they are compelled by circumstance and practically speaking, have no choice.Collective bargaining is their only tool and #government is disallowing it. So Biden's disallow request proves that strike is their only remedy.

@pkrugman Would love an economist perspective on how to think about the #strike and disallowing it.

Reading an article written by someone who studies very successful people and how they got there. The author conflates correlation with causality, doesn't bother to see if -any- research exists supporting or disproving his conclusions [there's a large body of work disproving some of his assertions], etc. This is a very dangerous form of disinformation: plausible-sounding and utterly vacuous.

I'm a slow-but-deep thinker. It can take me a while--days--to prepare my mind to take on a deep-thought task. But once I do, it's all-consuming flow until it's done. I'm getting into the Zone right now for a specific project and it feels *great!*

One of the things I love about #socialmedia is meeting new people who would otherwise have remained unknown to me. It's not always easy to make #friends remotely, but finding new friends as an #adult has not been easy.

I actually feel very strongly that AI companies and model builders should have to compensate those whose data is used to build the models (or get releases if they don’t compensate). If that requirement tanks the field, I’m willing to do it. Algorithmic theft is no less theft, no matter how clever the delivery mechanism https://twitter.com/EZE3D/status/1601695610498781184

As someone who has spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on education, and thousands of hours producing content, I do not believe that “information wants to be free” or that my work can be used to train an AI without my being compensated.

@cyberspook There's an entire section of the web devoted to nothing but people ripping off intellectual property and giving it away for free. Has nothing to do with big corps. They are a separate problem. My book sold 10K copies. It was pirated ~50K times. Mega corps gonna do what they're gonna do. For people on my scale, it's the small pirates that matter.

You have to watch for a while to get to the really insightful stuff, but this strikes me as an excellent analysis of how conservative humor veered so far into the un-funny in recent years. (This links to the part of the show that I found insightful) https://youtu.be/KSXKzPOcYDU?t=3241#conservative #humor #comedy #politics #entertainment #comedians

@grammargirl you can guess what my modest, humble recommendation might be for how to deal with this.

@grammargirl I believe that OpenAI should be 100% liable for consequential damages and for all court costs necessary for plaintiffs to collect. Possibly establish a large (multibillion dollar) fund to guarantee these claims move swiftly. Personal liability for OpenAI officers. Similar for copyright violations. I do not believe that just because automation makes it easy to scrape licensed content at gigantic scale, that it suddenly becomes OK. Ditto for misinformation widely distributed.

@grammargirl I might add this applies to google not having a mechanism for taking down misinformation links. I know someone who was the target of harassment and fake accusations that got posted on a web site by their ex. That’s what came up first in googling their name, and there was no way to get google to remove it.
