@dredmorbius It's also interesting to note that unlike PIR, Denic, the manager of the .de domain, is organized as a #cooperative. I don't think such a sale would be possible here without the agreement of the majority of members. #DotOrg #SaveDotOrg

@bortzmeyer @dredmorbius It's interesting to note that Verisign (.com, .net) is for profit, and that ISOC allegedly favors this approach (not sure whether it's true what Malthouse is saying here, though): https://twitter.com/jacobmalthouse/status/1200520427128311808

@bortzmeyer @dredmorbius Of course, since they are a cooperative (and a member of my employer, Genossenschaftsverband). No, I was referring to ISOC‘s views, as described in the tweet: Is it true that they generally prefer for-profit companies to take care of top level domains?

"Yes, much of the internet is and should be commercial — but it is important that significant parts of the internet also remain dedicated to the public interest. The current dot org ecosystem is clearly one of these parts" - Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, on the sale of #DotOrg: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/12/03/questions-about-org/ #SaveDotOrg

@mekkaokereke @22 I agree on the whole, but I think it is somewhat gendered. There is still this idea that something must be "wrong" with a woman who is very nerdy but only moderately interested in things like fashion. As a teenager 30 years ago, I was bullied heavily by other girls for being nerdy, and I believe this is still a problem even for girls today. On the other hand, I know few nerdy women who would flat out dismiss other women's interest in fashion or celebrity gossip.

@mekkaokereke @22 I think this is also the main reason why many male nerds judge topics like fashion or celebrity gossip so negatively. They view these as "women's topics". Conversely, however, they often still expect women to focus on interests like fashion and not get excited about technology.

@jakob @mekkaokereke @mxtthxw @22 That's an important point! Fashion is a relevant part of our cultures, and even I – a woman who is only moderately fashionable – am often impressed when I learn from more informed people what historical and current fashion can tell us about society.

@Doreen32128 @jakob @mekkaokereke @mxtthxw @22 I'm happy to hear that, but unfortunately I can't say much about this topic in particular. That's why I agree with the assessment that it's a pity that many of the real fashion nerds probably don't feel comfortable on Mastodon yet.

Could it be that ChatGPT gets even simple regex wrong? Out of curiosity, I asked it to write an expression to identify all occurences of "Volksbanken", but not if the word was preceded by a hashtag. It suggested: \b(?!#)Volksbanken\bDoesn't work (I used https://regex101.com/ to check). Correct solution (using negative lookbehind instead of negative lookahead): \b(?<!#)Volksbanken\bIf ChatGPT can't even get such simple tasks right - why do people seem to be so impressed with it?

@mo For me, those are the use cases where you actually need it, because you can't easily get similar results with simple programming code or search and replace.

@emilygorcenski This also reminds me of the media hype around George Hotz when he presented his self-driving car software in 2015. Many people argued: Of course he can do this, he has hacked video games before, and video games use tech similar to self-driving cars... That always confused me: Writing exploits for something isn't the same as creating it (isn't that obvious?), and games are different from real life. Yet the general mindset seemed to be: It's only "red tape" that's holding him back.

@jeena @maegul @fediversenews I think the distinction does make sense, because the Threadiverse relies much more heavily on the power of individual magazine ("subreddit") moderators to curb potential trolling and pile-ons than Mastodon does. These are different cultures.
