@feld But none of them tried to blame the customer for 'using a carwash''.Although my dad's 1964 RHD Merc 190 had a design flaw such that if you drove through a deep puddle at speed the wash doused the distributor and it would stall. Fortunately the momentum was _usually_ enough to get you through.

@aral @joelving @jenniferplusplus ‘he’ doesn’t even make sense on those terms, since it implies that the coder is not only male but also singular so it proclaims “no teamwork allowed here”. Sigh.

@nazokiyoubinbou @mcc Or Java - which is effectively both your options rolled into one.Semi seriously - I have production code that includes : if (_javaVersion.startsWith("1.4")) - jdk 1.4 was supported in 2002-2008The code still works.

@foone mindterm (java based graphical ssh) did this. https://www.astro.umd.edu/resources/internal/ssh/MindTerm_User.pdf I am not sure what happened to it. License changes meant I stopped using it a decade or more ago.

@futurebird The secret service (supposedly) does, they allow a new president to choose their code name. Clinton (allegedly) chose ‘Elvis’ -ensuring that everyday his detail had to whisper into their cuffs : “Elvis has left the building “ !

TIL you can patch the java card os in your e-sim with AT commands. This seems ‘wrong’ somehow. To compound the wrongness I am sending this patch in javascript from a browser over webRTC.

@gsuberland @lanodan @foone In the really, really early days (1936?) The BBC had a basement full of motor generator sets to convert DC voltages to power the valve (tube) amplifiers.http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artdec12/iw-radio1.html has photos.

@mcc As @f09fa681 knows, I've been building some non-media stuff with webRTC, but the standard is increasingly inimical to p2p data. Basically unless you have routable IPV6 at both ends most connections end up going though a server of some sort or other. It works fine if one end grants microphone access. (This is only true if both sides are browsers or things with browser-like permission schemes).

@bash If it is old enough you could try remote eject of the CD tray. That was what we did with our heap of identical (badly labelled) Sun servers.(I once did this over the fledgling internet from the UK to Norway in response to a phone support request. Possibly the highpoint of my career.)

@futurebird It's a classic example of Orwell's observation:"The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_and_the_English_Language

@nobody Because the 'click' counts as a user interaction , juicing someone's stupid metric. Also the click grants some additional permissions, allowing them to fingerprints you better.
