Ok I forgot to check out the instance and someone else from there came to my replies to (try to) insult me. Their instance's timeline has plenty of racism and transphobia so It's suspended now.

Fucking shit arch didn't run a grub-install after it was upgraded or something and now I have to use some Linux boot drive to do that. Fortunately I brought one. Where do I fill a bug report against an arch package?Edit: I don't think it was arch, see next post

Oh wait it was not arch. It was GRUB because the drive was accidentally disconnected while the computer was off so it was turned on once without drive. That messes up something with UEFI security. Why does grub not just warn that something's wrong instead of fucking completely breaking? I hate it.

Finally getting on track to get some personal projects done after months of life stuff that I don't really want to discuss here. I hope I can post stuff here instead of just boosting.

@theresnotime This wouldn't have happened with Linux using only open source software, at least with major distros. Because there's plenty of testing for distro and kernel releases, and open source software is readily available to be tested with it. CrowdStrike is not open source.I don't think Arch is a good fit for a production server though. Or for an average user for that matter.

@ives @theresnotime Yes, but I was talking about making machines crash at boot taking down a massive amount of servers. The XZ hack is exceptional because it can't be pulled off twice. Distributions have put measures in place to avoid a similar incident.

@volpeon it's a gross misinterpretation of the so called "hygiene hypothesis" which only applies to childhood development in contact to harmless organisms, not potential pathogens. I just learned that it has more accurate name of "old friends" hypothesis.

@mothcompute I have no idea but from reading the website, my thought was that they are still figuring it out. That the instances they have are just the playground for testing possible ideas they have.

@mothcompute Reading a bit more about it, it seems they don't federate with others outside the league, federation is based on an allowlist that is used by all members. That seems to answer the defederation problem: it's not allowed. Either you federate with all of them, or you don't.Regarding unannounced shutdowns, I think any solution would equally apply to everybody, so they're not particularly suited or unsuited for coming up with a solution. For example, content-addressed posts (e.g. a bit like what bluesky does [0]) and decentralized auth (for example through soatok's federated key transparency project [1]).[0] https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/[1] https://soatok.blog/2024/06/06/towards-federated-key-transparency/

@mothcompute My desire to federate with the rest of the league would stop me, I imagine.

@mothcompute For that to happen I imagine that a dissenter would want to coordinate with others to remain connected among themselves. That alone would probably give the incentive to try to solve the conflicts. And if a split occurs, the users could handle the situation the same as if a server went down, through a solution that it didn't occur to me to mention: Importing an account backup into another instance. I imagine they will eventually have a method to do this. Sharkey can do it already so I don't think it would be difficult to implement in GtS.

@zanagb @bedast VLC will do it in-device, not sending anything anywhere.Whisper models are terrible at transcribing casual conversations of doctors and patients because the training data doesn't reflect that kind of speech and environments. But it excels at transcribing movies etc. because a lot of its training data are closed captions. So this would actually work reasonably well. One can put some text with the names of characters, places, etc. as context and that makes it transcribe those names very well. (source: I've been using whisper models at work, and occasionally I've been putting the mic towards the speaker with some show I'm watching to test) (also: I haven't sent any data to openai nor paid them anything)

@zanagb @bedast What makes it clear that it's off-device? Can you provide a link? What tools are you talking about? I use Linux, what should I search? I would like to compare it with the tool I'm doing as part of my day job (for which I compile the *whole* source code incl. all dependencies so I know for a fact that nothing is ever syphoned).About fucked-up nonsense, what I see in youtube all the time: Youtube's automatic subtitles are beyond terrible. With automatic translations to my native language they're even worse. Family members use it and I can't fathom how can they get anything out of it. No pauses, no punctuation, full of mistakes.Using whisper is a 1000x improvement over youtube's. It adds all the correct punctuation and everything. It only fails with proper names (unless it's given a context) and with speech with a lot of background noise. In all the 4 languages I've been testing it.For regular casual speech it doesn't work _that_ well but my work's project has that in account by marking all the dubious words. It also discards whole sentences with too many dubious words because they tend to be gibberish from random noise. Which makes me shudder when I read about the model being used as-is for conversations without regard from confidence levels, without using the context feature, and using naive stitching (since it can only transcribe 30 seconds at a time). Results are awful as I would have expected.

@ricci Also keep in mind there's people that host their fedi instances at home but proxy them through a cheap VPS just to avoid exposing their home IP and location. I know of VPSs as cheap as $1/mo.How many people? That I don't know.

@Gargron This is crazy because even on iPhones it's perfectly possible to install applications that are not approved by Apple in any way, by regular users with no privileges. It's a hassle (at least initially) and it has limitations, but the fact that you can and you won't be able to do the same on Android is crazy.

Plenty of people is blaming "AI" in the abstract for the recent RAM price spikes, but I haven't seen anybody around here point to the actual and direct culprit of it all: Sam Altman secretly bought 40% of silicon wafers (not even produced RAM, just the silicon wafers) from two of the biggest RAM manufacturers, at the same time. Not even with specific plans for what kind of RAM do with them. This is just to mess up with competitors.Seriously, you can't hate OpenAI enough.https://www.mooreslawisdead.com/post/sam-altman-s-dirty-dram-deal

@wolf480pl JavaScript runtimes are crazy fast but JavaScript code itself can benefit a lot by being ported to C. I know because I did that. In turn, that C code can be run in JS through webassembly and in most cases it can be faster. However it has some limitations that JS itself doesn't have, such as the amount of memory you can use.
