@tek the same reason Bernie Madoff got such a harsh sentence; regulators don't care when the little guys ("retail" investors) are getting rooked, because that's how the big boys on Wall Street usually make their money. But when that top tier gets robbed, that's when they take action.

@stux my biggest question would be, is Meta still going to be able to scrape all of our data, regardless of whether we federate or not? Also I don't know how much validity an opinion like mine, as a normal user rather than an instance admin, would have... isn't it just a handful of people on each server whose opinions would even matter?

@stux my inclination, though, would be to hold off until we would see how those brave instances who did federate out-of-the-gate fared. I'm not really wanting to be a guinea pig, if there's any way to avoid it.

@PRNE I was about to say the same thing. Antipathy to "godless Communism" is strong in this country, although most Americans would be hard put to define Communism. Communism, of course, is the reason why "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance, back in the 1950s when the Red scare was at it's peak.
