@rechelon I think it’s really interesting that you’re trying to illustrate this point using a piece that goes on about the orientalist flattening of the Buddhist experience at length. You know, in an article with a long section about white middle class Buddhists making projections of their own raised-Christian values onto Buddhism, which warp both the teachings and values. Written by a person whose clearly doin’ fine family is clearly dabbling in that orientalist attitude so hard they fetishized and excused away the abuse of their child. Let’s not even get into their fixations. Like, really, this is a pretty Catholic sounding set of neuroses from my experiences, their family being “ex-Catholic” or otherwise. I don’t even like… like Buddhism, but this is a real funky piece to select. And given the “rich philosophical history” is a set of thought which is predicated on shared ontological assertions and builds upon, responds to, and shapes the religion and sociological practice, I am awash in wonder why you felt the need to press that shield out first.
