I think there's a difference between clinical, chemical chronic mental health issues, vs situational, acute mental health issues. With the push to get people to open up about mental health, I think a lot of people suffering from acute conditions are lumping themselves in with much more severe underlying conditions. In the modern world we are moving towards impersonal methods of communication with other people and so can feel more isolated. On social media we only see the highlights of other's lives, and are lead to believe that our life is lacking because we are not living the high life of social media influencers. We may have 10 friends who post holiday photos over a month, but it seems like EVERYBODY is out there having glamorous vacations. But we don't see the other 50 weeks of the year. With the push for opening up, we end up confusing clinical depression with going through a rough patch and rightfully needing help yo get back on track. People going through rough patches need help from friends and having a community; whereas people who are e.g. schizophrenic need caring medical intervention. The opening up of society should've been so that people with severe problems could get help, rather than being locked away in an asylum with poor standards. But now people conflate the two. The mental health needs of someone who is going through a rough patch are very different to somebody that is suffering delusions and hallucinations. But because liberal modern society members have friends that fit into the first category (because they have opened up about how they feel shit about their life circumstances), they think that people in the second category just need the same treatment. If we have increased numbers of severe mental illness (I don't know if we do or not), then I would wonder about those environmental impacts you have mentioned. If the increase is in mental health problems such as acute depression then I'm inclined to think it's more influenced by modern lifestyles rather than chemical imbalances

Firstly, I never thought I would see the phrase "Family Guy video essay"Secondly, I think it's partly a legacy/old media kind of thing. Apart from super boomers, people have grown up with TV, but it's only more recent generations that are growing up with YT as having always been in their life. Linked with the idea of YT being a social media platform, advertisers are more wary about getting called out for YT putting their ads somewhere deemed as unsavoury. I don't really understand why people can realise that an advert is not an endorsement on TV, but can't realise online. Perhaps it's because YT does describe itself as social media rather than being a video platform, perhaps it's because of the amount of yt content meaning manual review is hard. I do wonder what the advertiser situation will be like in 30 years time, whether YT is still around or a competitor takes over
