Few things scare a conservative more than a minority group they don't like with guns.

"In fact, if you think about it, the abstemious green options — lifestyle changes, anti-consumption, the retreat from material demands — seem rather compatible with austerity and neoliberalism’s four-decade-long march. If the liberal good guys are all telling us we already have too much, isn’t it that much easier for the bosses to tell us the same thing?Well, they’re wrong. Nothing’s too good for the working class."In Defense of Air-Conditioninghttps://jacobin.com/2018/08/air-conditioning-climate-change-energy-pollution

Hot take: even if the current global warming period was some kind of natural climate cycle (which it's not, but many climate denialists maintain that), it would still be in our best interests to a) geoengineer the planet to stop that climate cycle, and b) replace fossil fuels with nuclear power.(Probably going to anger both sides of the debate with this one.)

I've said this many times before, but just because two different groups both oppose capitalism doesn't make them allies. Radicals and reactionaries oppose capitalism for very different reasons.

🧵Something about the "capitalism is the ideology of infinite growth" meme has always bugged me, and I think I've finally figured out what it is:While capitalism as a system does encourage growth, it's only thinking about growth in the short-term future. Something that would optimize growth in the long-term, but might require substantial investment or impact growth in the short-term, tends to be difficult to fund under capitalism.

A great example of this is asteroid mining. In terms of long-term growth, it's difficult to imagine any single thing we could invest in right now that would have a greater impact. Yet asteroid mining projects have been struggling a lot over the past decade, largely due to two factors that inhibit the short-term profitability prospects: the large initial investment, and the fact that selling the resources from even a few asteroids all at once would crash every metals market several times over.

Combine these two factors, and any viable business plan for asteroid mining would likely have to expect to run in the red for a couple decades before finally breaking even. This means an asteroid mining project that expects to turn a profit would have to be thinking much more long-term than a typical venture capitalist would be willing to accept.

I suspect that under a capitalist profitability model, the only way to make asteroid mining work would be to go the Starship route, where you make a shitton of money from something else and use it to fund a passion project where you're willing to take the risk of it not profiting for a long time.On the other hand, under a cybernetic socialist economy, the long-term benefits of asteroid mining (or space exploration more generally) could be better taken into account

and the system could be truly optimized for growth in the long-term. Indeed, under known physics, the only way to truly achieve infinite growth would be to engulf the cosmos and turn off the accelerating expansion of space. This would be an incredibly long-term effort, spanning literally hundreds of quadrillions of years. This means that the true ideology of infinite growth is not capitalism, but cybernetic socialism (with some biocosmism-immortalism thrown in).

Infinite growth requires a longsightedness that capitalism rarely demonstrates in this context. Indeed, this lack of longsightedness is virtually the same ideology that tech-negatives demonstrate on a regular basis.

@Radical_EgoCom Yes, but it probably wouldn't look much like the state as we know it. Depending on your exact definition of a state, it might not necessarily even qualify as one; for example, it may not need a monopoly on the legitimate use of coercion.

"We can and should extract fuel from the seas for abundant, clean, and renewable energy."What they mean: fusion power by extracting deuterium. What I mean: fission power by extracting uranium and thorium and sticking them into breeder reactors.

Reminder that spent nuclear fuel is not waste, it's an energy source and an alchemy treasure trove of useful substances. We should be building the infrastructure to use it instead of worrying about sealing it away for geological timescales.
