@tj from what I understand, suspicion of the benevolent intentions of those doing surveillance (such as data aggregation) is pretty deep in the mastodon culture. It’s got a vibe tending more toward the anarchist.

@jxyzn @mattblaze there’s a tool, and there’s a community. How you treat the feedback of a new user of a tool is different from how you treat the feedback of a new member joining a community. Conflation of the two is probably a big source of the differences of opinion here.

@EmmaKelley yeah I’m not a massive gamer so can’t provide much personal experience there.

@seldo a cyclone hit the east coast of New Zealand and people were escaping out their 2nd floor windows. Probably the most expensive natural disaster we’ve had, beating a big quake in 2011.Shit’s getting real!

@simon @hans @dahukanna @gpshead I think of it as an incredibly articulate black-out drunk person who has no idea what they’re saying even though they can string a good sentence together on autopilot

@simon tailored libraries – where AI helps write something similar to a core library but stripped back to just what you need – is another, perhaps more likely, alternative. Notably it’s something that teams sometimes choose to do if they have the time, but it can involve too much wheel-reinvention.

@sean @simon at core it means that discussion participants are okay and drive-by drop-ins (like me, now 😆) are more at risk of not being seen. But is a social network that makes life harder for reply-guys all that bad? 😉

@tiago 500 tonnes is more like 40 long-haul flights, which is a lot but… it seems more valuable than 40 long-haul flights in the scheme of things.

@tiago I’m assuming that it wasn’t 500 megatons for ChatGPT training though, “only” 500 tonnes?Which at at a $400/tonne high estimate of social cost, would still be $200k of future social environmental cost, alongside the ~$5m training bill.

@simon @matthewskelton how well do guards such as embedding untrusted test in JSON, tables, block quotes, or markdown preformatted blocks work, I wonder?

@tante @esther I think they’re trying to turn into the place where you create that content too, not just store the files. “Move up the value chain”. So it could be part of that.Getting knowledge out of all your Dropbox-hosted docs would be another area they might dig into. That’s probably more likely tbh.

@tante @esther the valuations on which they took investment only make sense if they grow a lot. The investment is risky enough that the target must be a 10x return. A profitable plateaued business is worth maybe 5-10x annual profit. So if you’ve got VC at 15x revenue (not uncommon), and you hope to get to 20% profit, you would need to grow 45-90x before you plateau for the bet to make sense.

@simon @iaintshootinmis I’ve used 101domain for years, first went there to get Estonian domains (sminn.ee 😁) and they have most everything else too. No complaints from me.

@tiago waiting for someone to develop the fork and release it for interested people to host their own instance, is IMO in keeping with the spirit of free software, which has always been “anything you want… as long as you can code it”I’m also unsure where mastodonians really embrace the spirit of the purely free & open internet, as it’s been shown to have a lot of abuse vectors, and avoiding abuse has taken a priority. The antipathy toward webcrawling is a big example.

@tiago webcrawling isn’t abuse but it can enable it - a lot of Twitter roles monitor search keywords, for example.A lot of mastodon’s original spade work came from communities under attack on Twitter wanting a safer space, notably the trans community.Framing a concern for abuse as authoritarian is hysterical and ridiculous. You can disagree with the trade-off made, but get a grip.

@simon still, gotta be better than using something turing-complete. In your place I would try some adversarial expressions and put a max length of 1000 chars on it or something.
