@chrismessina @gwachob @erincandescent @lanodan @evan Forgive me if stating the obvious but just because something's been around 15+ years doesn't mean it isn't relevant to this moment. Some things take decades or longer before they reach their most powerful time.Related - I still believe that in the long run, wikis will have more influence on global culture than blogs. It's just that blogs (aka tweets or 'status' posts) fit the dominant culture's focus on the now, the latest/shiniest thing.

@FOSSlife It fascinates me that in English there is no settled term for these things, and that's gone on long enough it may never collapse to one term. This is not the case in at least some other languages.

@atomicpoet @kynyc @stefan @fediversenews Comparing by function and comparing by community are both useful. Without explaining the distinction, the site as is may make more sense to a technical audience than a general audience.

I'm just going to keep reposting this occasionally, for my sake as much as for yours. #JOMO #FOMO

@qdot For starters, I'd definitely watch that Black Mirror episode. :-)More #srsly, looking at how technology is "sold" to people and used & abused today, the bulk of my concerns about dystopian future outcomes come not from #AR (or #AI) technologies in & of themselves, as much as the thought that Apple or Microsoft or other #forprofit monopolists / oligopolists will be allowed - again - to be the central decision-makers of how new technologies are developed, marketed, maintained, and so on.

@cjust @danlyke Now I'm trying to think of other worthy series. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon comes to mind, for science fiction.

@futurebird I think you're totally on to something in general. Stanley G. Weinbaum's Martians stuck out as perhaps the first in modern SF who were actually alien, but they did not seem to be afraid. There are examples of aliens being afraid or at the very least cautious about us from early SF, for example, H. Beam Piper's Fuzzies. #sciencefiction

@futurebird Neither animal nor vegetable, nor even mineral. Am I alive? Do I even exist? ;-)tl;dr When young I made a looong list of every 'identity' I could think of, then more, way over 100. Experience blew my mind out about identity and now it just doesn't bother me any more. Identity is kind of like language in general. It's a thing. It's real yet made up. We use it in all kinds of helpful and unhelpful ways. And almost anything can transmogrify into anything over time.

@futurebird @CliftonR Beginning to seem like scattered pockets of water is a common feature of rocky planets and larger moons. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/science/saturns-moon-titan-may-not-have-a-buried-ocean-as-long-suspected-new-study-suggests/

@futurebird Interesting research. Only about 10% for NYC, that strongly suggests that you are *not* in the Marvel universe.
