Frontenders, I am *begging* you to earn whatever pride you take in your work. How? By testing what you make on the devices and networks most people have. It's not hard, doesn't take long, and there are great automations like webpagetest.org that can make it even simpler.

@jyasskin In fairness, I'm only even thinking hard about this because I want to support Safari, and *boy howdy* do they hate web developers...https://caniuse.com/av1

The findings in this ruling are utterly devastating to the arguments Apple keeps repeating on a loop in every venue:https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/apple-loses-uk-lawsuit-over-app-store-commissions-2025-10-23/Dissembling expert witnesses getting totally routed is a particular high point (page 286: https://www.catribunal.org.uk/sites/cat/files/2025-10/14037721%20Dr.%20Rachael%20Kent%20v%20Apple%20Inc.%20and%20Apple%20Distribution%20International%20Ltd%20-%20%20Judgment%20%5B2025%5D%20CAT%2067%2023%20Oct%202025_0.pdf )

At the veeeery bottom of Apple's towering infero of half-truths is the lie that developers *owe Apple* for its generosity in building a way for folks to build software for iOS.This is *ludicrous*.Apple would build SDKs and distribution mechanisms *just to make the iPhone viable*, regardless. And every thinking person knows it. The fact that this is only being chipped into relief one court finding at a time just shows how thick they've laid it on, and how pliant the tech press are.

The new webpagetest.org UI is working my very last nerve. Let's tally the brokenness:❌ default, simple configs for newcomers? gone❌ not just pre-mobile, mobile-hostile❌ filmstrip view nuked and useless❌ connection, viewpoint, device, and geo selection UIs lead you to confusion and inevitable comparison failure❌ sharing requires "generate link" dance instead of, you know, having good URLsUtter debacle. Roll this back, Catchpoint.

Look, I've given RSC a hard time — for at least 3 years it featured viral client-side dependency ambush, it generally makes code harder to factor and reason about, and doesn't add anything useful to the toolbox except to make RPCs slower — but JFC, this takes the bloody cake:https://marma.dev/articles/2025/when-perfect-code-fails

I meet web developers who cannot accept that most smartphones in the world, and even in the US, are not iPhones. And that keeps them from understanding that the "i" in "iPhone" stands for "inequality":

The entire frontend industry needs to sit with these numbers. If this data is right, SPAs are only winning *one* soft-nav per session on average. So divide the up-front costs of SPA tech by total clicks on site...is it worth it? The @rumarchive suggests not.https://rumarchive.com/insights/#:~:text=of%20interactive%20chart.-,Multi%20vs%20Single%20Page%20Apps,-The%20following%20graphs

How broken is today's frontend culture?@fugueish points out that the median *mobile* page is now larger than a copy of DOOM (2.6 MiB vs. 2.48 MiB), the P75 page is larger than 2 DOOMs, and the P90 mobile page is 4.5x the size of DOOM:https://httparchive.org/reports/page-weight

One of my hopes for 2026 is that browser vendors take more responsibility for today's pervasively bad experiences. Failure to cabin content in many dimensions is creating demand for interposing layers that only serve users better because browsers fail to act as the user's agent:https://infrequently.org/2025/11/performance-inequality-gap-2026/

@Olliew By way of background, I helped build some of the very first large-scale Ajax libraries, including what we'd now think of as client-side routing (back when pushState barely worked). Also helped design the new navigation API that Safari *finally* implemented this year. What I'm trying to say is most of what people want are transitions between views, and that no longer requires views be built client-side. State and client-side routing are now entirely optional in many apps.

The Verge is actually doing it. Actually connecting the dots between the fascistic tendencies of app stores with the profit motives of their proprietors. FINALLY.The open web has been roadkill in the profit games the mobile duopoly has set up, muscled out of view with policies and choices that were designed to leave no fingerprints. But we can all see it clearly now:https://www.theverge.com/policy/859902/apple-google-run-by-cowards

This piece by Elizabeth Lopatto is a huge service to us all. It cleary and searingly says the true thing (even if in question form): Apple and Google's claims that they should rule our phones *because they can be trusted to* are bullshit. Always have been. And the truly caustic thing is that the corruption eating these companies is eating our democracy too:https://infrequently.org/2025/10/the-app-store-was-always-authoritarian/
