@NanoRaptor The main problem with the early Sony floppy drives were that they didn't have any way to rewind the floppies after reading. That wasn't a problem with the old 5.25" floppies which you could just turn over to use on the other side, but you couldn't do that with the new 3.5" floppies. They had to be manually rewound by rotating the platter with your thumb. Annoying with SD disks, and completely impractical with HD disks (which required twice as many revolutions to rewind fully.)

@lauren @cstross Do you really think there's enough time left before the election for the Democratic Party to both choose and unify behind a new candidate as well as campaign effectively for them?

Open question, but how did we end up in a situation where the Tech Industry is fronted mainly by people who've read sci-fi but didn't undestand it?#scifi #tech #tormentNexus #enshittification

@futurebird "Waffling" and "flatness." It reads like someone trying to push out an article or copy on a subject they don't really understand, so they just jot down whatever facts they can find in a loose structure, all with the exact same emphasis on every single piece of information.

@davidrevoy Funny. If they wanted to share it with their children, you'd think they'd have done so already by Episode 36.One one might almost suspect they _aren't_ such an avid reader as they proclaim.(It also reads like a form letter.)

@ErikUden “only the AfD supports what we want” -- a wise person would pause at that realisation and reexamine if what they want is actually something they should want.

@kims Also, tariffs has diminishing returns as a political weapon. The effect of going from 0% to 25% in tariffs is massive, but the effect of going from 25% to 50% is academical: There's precious little trade that will be stifled at 50% that wasn't already stifled at 25%.

@stux The thing about fences is that, with just a little bit of chain and a good padlock or two, they also work great at keeping people _in_.

@benroyce At some point, we're going to have to ask if some of these actors are deliberately _trying_ to increase death rates.

@futurebird Even if, for the sake of argument, you ignore the real cost of LLM compute and assume the bubble won't burst -- your whole business has now changed to be just reselling LLM compute: You've become a middle-man that adds little to no value and only exists until your customers realizes they can just buy directly from the source, or your LLM provider decides they'd rather keep your profit margin for themselves.

@datarama @regehr There is one important question that keeps getting overlooked in all the talk about LLM code generators replacing human developers, and that is "Where's the software?"Where _is_ the software? If LLMs are actually useful and yields a significant productivity boost in software development, where's all the new software? Where are the more rapid release cycles, the more frequent updates, the long-requested features finally being added? Why has nothing changed on _that_ end?
