Every time I sign up for some website, I use a unique email address just for that site. The idea is that if spam arrives, I'll be able to see immediately who sold me out or whose database has been compromised. Now I get email every day from some scammer. The message makes some bullshit claims, and demands a bitcoin payment.I'm not surprised this is happening, but am surprised at the number and range of websites whose databases have been stolen.#security #email #ransom

Dear Linux users: On my phone I use an offline browser to download an entire website. It's because I need that site for reference on the go, and am often without internet access when I need the info. Can anybody recommend a #Linux program that can do this? Preferably a #FOSS one. If I can find such a program, it might be possible for me to switch from #android to #Linux for my phone. (That #Librem phone is tempting.)#offlinebrowser @Purism

I've been looking around for an alternative to Meetup. There are a few possibilites! The one I'm considering at the moment is Get Together, which describes itself as "an open source event manager for local communities."I like the project's goals.Have any of you tried using Get Together?https://gettogether.community/#EventManager #Meetup #MeetupAlternative

I've been out shovelling snow today. My friend the retired doctor gave me solemn advice about it, including *Never hold your breath while shovelling snow.* Huh? He claims that breath-holding + shovelling puts crazy strain on the heart. Interesting. That conversation led me to this 2017 BBC article:Why do so many people die shovelling snow?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-30119410Well. The more you know, I guess.#snow #SnowShovelling #cardiac #fitness #HeartAttack #CardiacArrest

It is unusual. To me it seems almost like a pudding version of ...shortbread cookie dough? But it is scrumptious, so it has become a regular breakfast here. It's filling and sustaining.I think I'm going to call it Butter Breakfast Pudding, or maybe ShortBread pudding.https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-coconut-porridge#keto #ketogenic #LowCarb #recipe #breakfast #food #cooking

I have a mutant tulip here. You know what regular tulip leaves look like, right? They don't usually wrap around a neighbour tulip in an affectionate way.#tulip #gardening #garden

@sean The feature I'm waiting for is "post to this instance only." If that becomes a feature, Mastodon instances will become usful to my family groups and local organizations. #Mastodon

Here is a privacy thing that seems strange to me.I buy something from an online store. The connection is https. Secure server. We protect your privacy, says the website. Great! Once I've placed my order, they send complete details of my order to me by regular email. Unencrypted. The confirmation email includes my name, address, payment method, and the list of what I bought. How is that protecting my privacy, ffs? And there is no way to opt out of this. #privacy #shopping #onlineshopping

I'm tired of "social distancing" and related terms. I think we should call it "spacing out," as if we are all back in the 70s. We'd say "space out, man" and it would be way more fun.

It's hard to change the laws around drug use, but maybe the virus crisis can do that. Because addicts are not going to stay at home if they need drugs, are they? So giving drug users a safe and legal suply of the drugs that addict might help all of us.https://www.macleans.ca/society/health/a-safe-supply-for-drug-users-may-be-the-only-way-to-head-off-an-even-greater-coronavirus-tragedy/#drugs #law #harmreduction

I miss Majordomo and Listserv mailing lists. They used to be so common! You would find a list for one of your interests, sign up, and then you would be set to go. Any subscriber could send email to one address, and all the other subscribers would get a copy of the message. Discussions happened, community formed.Do you know of any interesting mailing lists that are around now? Not tech ones, not some stupid mailchimp annoyance, but real community-focused email discussion lists. Anybody?#mailinglist #majordomo #listserv

A few weeks ago it became clear that the gyms would all close, so I got organized and bought a bar and some plate weights. Now I can work out on the porch while ravens laugh at me. I like this. When the gyms re-open, I wonder how they'll do. Will business resume as before, or will all the people who figured out how to work out at home just give up on going to the gym?#fitness #gym #powerlifting

@fitheach I do miss the social aspect of going to the gym. But do I miss it to the tune of hundreds of dollars a year? That will be the question.

@polishdub Feeder is the best I've found, and I've tried dozens. It does groan a bit due to the crazy number of feeds I follow, but less so than other RSS readers.
