@virginiaheffernan @davidallengreen — See also: the Soviet Union; I remember going to bed one night, the Soviet Union had existed since forever and would continue to exist forever, and then the next morning the Soviet Union no longer existed. Nothing lasts forever, no nation state no political alliance no corporation no social structure; we would do well to remember the fragility of seemingly immutable structures.

Reminder that friends encourage friends to use the CW feature for posts with the potential to irk, vex, upset, or trigger; and friends discourage friends from auto-reposting material from Other Places into This Place. As a user, if other users use the CW feature properly *you* can choose to view CWs expanded by default; if you don’t CW your posts, other users *can’t* choose whether or not to see it. It’s not wokery to use the CW feature, it’s basic courtesy.

One of the guiding principles of the Open Web is to let user’s experience the web in the way they want to experience it; you can create your design, layout, colour scheme, etc and suggest it to users, but if users don’t like that — or can’t properly perceive it — they can override your suggested design with settings of their own. Thus if you use the CW feature, you empower users to choose for themselves.

And as a final thought which will be meaningful to a small number of readers, ‘four lines or fewer on demon.local, please’.

@simon@simonwillison.net @timbray [1/3] I think the summary of the issues is good, the analysis of the need for solutions is pertinent, but sadly I think the proposed solutions are……‘analogous to the state of the European-accessible web post-PECD/GDPR’ :)Srsly, web users already have far too many buttons to click to accept Terms and Conditions in order to access content as it is, we don’t need to be adding *more* barriers!

@simon@simonwillison.net @timbray [2/3] How about instead we adopt simpler solutions:* Add an additional toggle on the content sharing settings so users can select logged-in-only or not, and* We accept that conversations on the Fediverse are ephemeral, and by default purge the content database of any instance after a ‘suitably ephemeral period’ of something like three months; if people want their words archived permanently, that’s what blogs are for

@simon@simonwillison.net @timbray [3/3] And then full text searches on the public database can be permitted to meet the useful case of being able to find out what’s going on in a disaster zone whilst it’s happened.

@simon@simonwillison.net That’s a fair response, but I’d say if it was clearly described as the functionality of Mastodon, would you still ditch it?

@AnarchoNinaWrites @nicoco Indeed; the asteroid which killed the dinosaurs wasn’t the first nor was it the biggest mass extinction event. In Earth-science terms, climate change is a blip. But that of course doesn’t abrogate our responsibility to try to preserve as best we can the conditions for life as we currently know it.

On YouTube right now we’ve got Doctor Mike Reacts To An Episode Of House. He’s being snarky about a scene in which somebody — quite ridiculously — considered the possibility somebody got Smallpox as a result of a lab escape.I might comment about how in Birmingham we know all about Smallpox lab escapes…

We’re watching the Doctor Who story The Hungry Earth, which was set 10 years in the future from when it was broadcast. Which means it was set four years ago from now.
