@reproducible_builds @eighthave @fdroidorg I would strongly dispute that f-droid is in any way an "app store", it is an opinionated build service. Nothing wrong with that, but calling it an app store implies lots of things that it doesn't and cannot deliver and in the end raises rather misplaced expectations among its users.

@stevenroose @dachary @forgefriends https://xkcd.com/386/ but:No, this is totally not how it works. There is literally no protection against anybody from registering an unprotected 'word' as a trademark, outside of the restrictions that apply to them in general (not descriptive etc.). Which is why you will see not only corps but large non-profits registering and defending their marks quite vigorously.

@stevenroose @dachary @forgefriends "yes" Depending on the territory there may be some rights for unregistered marks, but as a rule, if you are using a mark and it is important to you, you should better get it registered.

@IvanSanchez @ianturton the problem is how does the "user" aka downstream distinguish between paid and unpaid maintainers? Not even starting on the obvious issue this would cause with indirect dependencies.

@IvanSanchez @ianturton well if you are not maintaining a project with the intention that other people use it (the question is if that even fits the definition), then sure, no reason you can't say that. But if you want to have a downstream (why else would you publish it in the 1st place) you don't want it to be a cascade of "not my problem"s.

@fanf42 @IvanSanchez @ianturton I don't want to put words in @IvanSanchez mouth but I suspect the issue is more that you can't really just put some code out there without being told one way or the other that you have to do all these other things. Document you project, make it nice and welcoming, fix all security issues, have a proper inclusive governance structure and so on. That makes a lot of sense for the 0.001% deep pocket projects with lots of reach, but not so much the rest.

@fanf42 @IvanSanchez @ianturton BTW @webmink has been blogging a couple of times about the CRA https://the.webm.ink/the-commission-must-consult-the-open-source-community

@IvanSanchez @ianturton And I'm not claiming that there is any simple solution for the quagmire (well outside of "no dependencies", but that is a bit unrealistic).

@webmink @letsencrypt the independence from the linux foundation is great, the joining not so. I should start quoting Cato the Elder on the LF.

@eighthave @danb @webmink @fdroidorg again this glosses over the downside that if a dependency needs a patch (security or functional) and there is no expectation that this will happen within your release time frame, you need to hard fork and re-publish to remain f-droid compatible. And yes I've had to do that to many times in IRL to let this nonsense pass as is.

The downsides of being frugal. The #OpenStreetMap Foundation spends, even with a slightly more ambitious budget this year than previously, less than %1 of what WMF/Wikipedia does, but is struggling to make ends meet. There is no threat a la the infamous Wikipedia ads that the project will shut down, but without the funds activities will have to be cut back significantly. If you consider OSM valuable consider https://supporting.openstreetmap.org/

@batalanto @adam Note that the OSMF has an "EU bank account" https://wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Donate/International_Bank_TransfersCheques nearly never make sense (if you think bank fees for xfers are bad, you are in for a surprise wrt cheques outside of the US), and accepting cash has its own issues.

@batalanto @matzipan @BrianSmith950 @adam the point is without paypal the OSMF would be without a payment processor, nobody has any illusions about the company as such, using them is simply a practicality.

@fartkart you would have to explain what app (?) you are using to get a pointer to the correct place for your complaint. #OpenStreetMap is a data collection project and doesn't provide any end user navigation apps.

#openstreetmap While I was generating some numbers on editor usage yesterday (for the @geomob podcast we just recorded and maybe for a diary post too), I noticed a massive (at least in OSM terms) anomaly in the newbie signup rates for RapiD (Facebooks iD fork). In February 2023 it rocketed up to nearly 3'000 to then return to the previous couple of dozen per month.Anybody know the background here?

I suppose I should have mentioned @notjustbikes (just re-watched the video on cycle infrastructure in Swiss cities a couple of days back). The Stadttunnel https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/de/mobilitaet/velo/velomassnahmen/stadttunnel.html at least moves things in the right direction.
