How are people from other instances seeing my stuff here? Well, I guess that's the wrong question. *Why* are people seeing my stuff? I'm pretty much a nobody on here. Not that I mind. Hello, somebodies.

I've been working with a Signal developer to improve the #accessibility of the desktop app, and I think it's getting to a usable state (at least on Windows). There are sounds for chats in the current window now, and messages are list items (and also articles) so they can be reached easily. There are also a few keyboard shortcuts to jump to the oldest unread message, jump to the composer, and navigate to various sections of the app. I'll be addressing some of the remaining issues, such as the chatty conversation windows and the fact you can tab to every single message in the history. If anyone has feedback on #screenreader accessibility of the current beta, I can pass it along. I haven't tested it on MacOS or Linux yet. The beta is here: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318471-Signal-Beta

I did eventually get Rachel to forward my concerns to the relevant team ... supposedly, but it did in fact take some back and forth afterward. The sad thing is, most customer service is just as clueless. You're not just reporting an issue, you're giving an accessibility 101 course with potential language and knowledge barriers just to justify why the thing you're reporting is actually a thing they should be reporting. It doesn't matter how technical you sound when you report it, it's always "Please send screenshots", "Please try another device", "Please reinstall the app,", "Please ask someone to do it for you", "Please stop having accessibility needs", "Please don't make me work hard to do my job because I'm not paid enough to care about what a screen reader is." I'd rather have AI at this point. I'm going to need some solid evidence before I say I'm wrong about that.

@stux Interesting, I wonder how they perform or whether there is a way to have an invisible text-only UI behind the graphical one so you don't have to make two different versions of the same site. I appreciate the consideration, anyway.

It's really unfortunate that so many large companies have cancelation departments that can offer discounts not available to the billing team. There's nothing more annoying than talking to billing and saying "Hey, I can't afford/justify the cost of this, is there anything you can do? and being conclusively told "no"...Then going through the cancellation process and getting a flurry of e-mails offering you the exact discounts you asked for. It's like they need to know you're serious before they'll actually give a shit.Do they not realize that by the time someone closes their account, they've already investigated alternatives and probably set one up?I don't know how to put this into words any better, it just leaves a bad taste. I'll usually go ahead with the cancelation anyway unless the retention discount is extremely good. I don't want the statistics to show that their strategy is working.

Welcome to Utah, where (according to Reddit) it is perfectly legal for police officers to strand a 19-year-old pregnant girl in the freezing cold and refuse to let her retrieve her belongings from the car they impounded for having registration that expired 0 days ago. https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/185meow/19_year_old_abandoned_on_roadside_after_car/

@stux They really do still seem like overgrown iPhones to me. I can't imagine what anyone would do with an M4 chip. Maybe really heavy gaming or video editing? It's certainly a really weird choice for the debut of their new chip.

@stux That's true. I know there are standalone drawing tablets and I don't really know how they compare. Maybe if that's what you want, it's a good bargain. The mini is nice as a media device. The battery is huge and if your hands are big you can hold it like a phone. But I don't need a Mac chip on my iPad.

@Gaptangle People would probably be surprised to hear this given what I do, but I have absolutely no idea where people hang out these days. I know of little corners but I could probably count the number of truly active ones I have saved on one hand. I think that hosts like TTHub have allowed people to just splinter off into their own bubbles. The unfortunate reality is that people also have a habit of moving elsewhere when there's conflict with a single person, rather than working it out like adults. And there are several people just handing out servers like candy. Between that and the move to Discord for others, I think things have changed a lot. Someday I want to write an app that lets people see who's where, kind of like TTCom for the web, but that is a massive undertaking that will probably involve paying at least one person to help me code the interface and it's unlikely to happen soon.

@jwildeboer I think a lot about the fact that we all have pocket communicators with many different radios in them, but if disaster ever strikes, none of them can communicate with each other. The more I think about it, the more it feels like a sign of a world gone mad.
