Hi, first post on Mastodon. I'm a self taught software developer using #guix, #stumpwm, #emacs, and currently experimenting with #nyxt.I'm fond of #foss, and do some drive-by contributions to various projects as I encounter issues.By day, I'm working as a consultant mostly using #windows, #dotnet and #csharp, but I use #fsharp whenever I get the chance.Looking forward to meeting likeminded people on Fosstodon!

@galdor The issue is probably that people find the problems unchallenging, and thus find more interesting problems to solve by introducing all these things. I've seen horrible abominations, completely wrong choices of technology and patterns, only to scratch someone's curiosity. Also called CV driven development.

@reginagrogan is the infosec community worse than tech in general? I thought this was a problem anywhere where the large majority is male. Unfortunately :( I hope every man is speaking up against such behavior when they see it.

Meta is killing Workplace, and June 2026 all content is deleted. Maybe it's time to start embracing FOSS and have ownership of your data instead?Sure, you can download the information, but you don't have the platform to use them in a meaningful way.https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/14/meta-is-shutting-down-workplace-its-enterprise-communications-business/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGlnaS5uby8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAGcvZ9g9pn6LhWv4-ZuYtFlVg5TsuykaAmXsY6O-GVATtqyddl3l0VKAboakIPvkfL21f-QBw9Y66ISKTuL5SMk8-6Em864vfqQ6l-eA16yAa_mbGU0UOqvdXRejdwr1p5WVMTYkbiQGPkhou5cRw2Rew9Db_-xDvrYKaR2iCXyl

@robinheghan Yes, please, there's plenty of room in the rabbit hole! ;) #guile #emacs is not production ready though. But I'm eagerly awaiting the fruits of #spritely to reach #guix: https://spritely.institute/news/spritely-nlnet-grants-december-2023.html

@sun @robinheghan Yes, I bet the majority use Emacs. scheme-mode, geiser or the new arei and ares by @abcdw of #rde and #guixhome fame.https://git.sr.ht/~abcdw/emacs-areihttps://git.sr.ht/~abcdw/guile-ares-rs

@bazkie I bet running YouTube costs a lot of money in terms of development, infrastructure, moderation etc. Who should pay for this? Right now, you can let advertising companies pay by watching their commercials, or you can pay directly to YouTube to avoid watching them?1/2

@bazkie I'm in no way promoting Google here, but I don't like the fact that everyone expects everything to be free of charge. People have no problems spending $25/week for a commute coffee, but if someone charge $5/month for something which gives a lot of value, people spend *a lot* of time finding a gratis alternative.2/2

@bazkie Sure they're not in financial troubles, but money don't grow on trees. Should they charge for GCP, but let YouTube be free? They have to charge for some things to give away other things for free. Yes, they are a dystopian megacorporation with a monopoly, and you think paying for it is unethical, but using it is ethical? There's #peertube too if you don't want to use YouTube. I paid SDF in order to get a toobnix.org account.
