For today's #retrocomputing blog post, I did a deep dive into Tandy 1000 models. Did you know there were 14 of them? I also covered one other model that arguably Tandy should have called a 1000. How many models can you name?https://dfarq.homeip.net/tandy-1000-models/

@MMWW I have that on my IBM 5170. I used this photo to troll my then-CISO after I got a fake phishing message saying my machine couldn't be upgraded to Windows 11.

@MMWW thanks! My 5170 was a fun project. And yes, if you're used to 3.1 or newer, Windows 3.0 looks unfinished.

@twylo nobody wants to read a book of my retrocomputing memoirs, but if they did, I'd title it Varta Juice and RIFA stank.

A question about a Firefox CVE from 2004 applying to versions less than 1.0 came up at work today. "How do you fix it?" the person asked. "Upgrade Firefox," I said.. "The current version is about 116, so I'm a little surprised to see this one coming up." #VulnerabilityManagement

@shaun Going that far back I have to wonder how many will load. I don't think AJAX was common yet. I see weird random things all the time but this one's the weirdest and randomest I've seen this year.

@furgar WTF does this even mean? When the Spanish Flu pandemic came along, we threw everything we had at it to put an end to it. When the COVID-19 pandemic came along 101 years later, we could have thrown everything we had at it and ended it in 1-2 years, but we lacked the maturity and self-discipline to do so. Therefore, FOUR YEARS LATER we're still paying the price. The right answer when faced with a once-every-100-years pandemic is to respond to it, not behave like a toddler.

CP/M has been ported to the 6502! It may be more interesting than useful, but still.... The developer notes running it on a C-64 with 1541 is a miserable experience. #RetroComputing https://github.com/davidgiven/cpm65

Today's blog post covers Intel's 186 CPU. The 80186 was a flop as a desktop CPU but a famous company founded by two guys in a garage in California used it very successfully in an early handheld. Not to mention the extensive use it saw as an embedded CPU. #RetroComputing #DOScember https://dfarq.homeip.net/intel-80186-cpu-so-misunderstood/

@penguin42 interesting! And I see it spawned a cottage industry of products intended to help its compatibility. Definitely worth adding a mention. Thanks!

@penguin42 I saw a mention of a product called The Problem Solver that made dBase and Turbo C work. Looking into Essential Software's product though, apparently it was just a memory upgrade marketed as a compatibility improvement.

@mikemathia that's very relatable. My dad came home from work early one day and found me with the computer completely disassembled on his table. "You gonna be able to put that back together?" he asked nervously. He sat and watched me as I put it all back together. That was when he realized I had a valuable skill. Not long after that I landed my first job as a computer technician.

29 years ago, on Aug 8, 1995, investors thought they'd found the next Microsoft when Netscape, maker of a web browser, launched its IPO. Netscape started the dot-com boom, but wasn't around for the finish. Their legacy is the Firefox browser. https://dfarq.homeip.net/netscape-the-ipo-that-went-boom-on-its-way-up-and-down/

It was 35 years ago this week that Sega unleashed its Genesis console on the North American market. It was a 16-bit console that differentiated itself several ways and set the blueprint for competing with Nintendo. #retrogame #sega #SegaMegaDrive https://dfarq.homeip.net/sega-genesis-the-un-nintendo/

I never used #aol but I used AOL before it was AOL. Back then it was called Quantum Link, and early iterations of AOL used the same technology under the hood. In this blog post, I dive into AOL's origins on the #commodore64 and, yes, the #atari2600 . #retrocomputing #commodore https://dfarq.homeip.net/quantum-link-aol-before-it-was-aol/

Emoticons haven't always been with us, but did you know the first recorded usage of them was 42 years ago today, in September 1982? We drew them with keyboard characters sideways back then. https://dfarq.homeip.net/emoticons-in-the-80s-and-90s-we-had-em/

Released at the end of 1993, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was an interim release that made it run faster on higher-end PCs than Windows 3.1 did, by backporting 32-bit networking and disk routines from what became Windows 95. #retrocomputing https://dfarq.homeip.net/windows-for-workgroups-3-11/

42 years ago, IBM released the successor to its very successful IBM PC. Dubbed the PC/XT, it added a hard drive and more expansion slots while still running at the same speed. And at a pretty steep price. #retrocomputing #vintagecomputers #1980stech #techhistory https://dfarq.homeip.net/ibm-pc-xt-model-5160/
