@futurebird this may be a let-down on the nerd factor, but programmers are laaaazy. I guarantee there’s a web utility that lets you select a local image file and displays HSV color values at the mouse pointer coordinates. Totally understand avoiding G*MP; pretty sure Inkscape will do this, but most people don’t think of it for raster graphics

@futurebird it’s possible to do this now without the bytes leaving the local machine, although a security conscious hacker wouldn’t trust an unknown website … maybe they could disable the WiFi after the site loads 🤔

@futurebird sounds like dye sublimation. I did IT at a small accounting office in the 90s when they bought a fancy new dye sub color printer. Inside were CMYK reservoirs of melty wax. The color was the most vibrant I’ve ever seen and went on super thick. You could scrape a track through a fresh print with your fingernail.
