@stux @epso gitea is pretty cool. They're apparently working on making it use ActivityPub for federation too, so that'll be awesome to see - hopefully it'll let us start breaking down the walled gardens of stuff like Github

One valuable thing that I've figured out as an adult is that for every good idea, no matter how inevitable it may seem, there is still an ideal time and place to make it happen. It takes a long time, and a lot of failures, to begin recognizing how the winds can shift in you favor. But once you have the hang of it, it's incredibly powerful for getting shit done.

@jk "install package, which removes every other package" has absolutely happened to me 3-4 times in the past few years. Luckily only once on a work machine.I think I just put up with it because the overall Linux experience (full control, and things usually Make Sense) is better for me than Windows (relatively locked down and frequently nonsensical). But it's absolutely a barrier if you aren't 1) fairly technical and 2) a glutton for punishment.

I remember when diaspora* got early traction back a decade+ ago, and being enthralled by the concept. When I learned about Friendica/GNU Social, decentralized social media felt like it was maturing. When Mastodon found its early footing, it started to feel inevitable.I started my instance in 2017 and, even during the slow times, I never lost that feeling. The past two waves of birdsite exodus have really felt like the start of a new chapter in all of this, where the inevitable becomes reality.

The new chapter isn't as much about drawing comparisons to other services or convincing people about its merits. The network is here. The community is here. The walled garden big tech sites are on fire. People are going to eject from them, and the fediverse has enough mass that we can let gravity do the work of pulling them into orbit.

@vtmicah true! It's not to say that *everyone* is going to jump ship here. But it doesn't really matter. The fediverse will still be here, doing its own thing, building communities, etc., regardless of what happens elsewhere. That's what I mean about gravity - people *will* be pulled in. Maybe not everyone, but we don't need everyone to thrive.
