@jkosseff Please help me understand that sentiment. Why is Twitter the best way to promote journalists' work? Facebook is massively bigger and early evidence from @briankrebs suggests that Mastadon is already driving more traffic to his articles than Twitter did, apparently because the follows are apples/oranges to Twitter follows.https://infosec.exchange/@briankrebs/109518462394519603

@adamasnemesis Yeah, the "lost" state of Franklin here in the U.S. could have really changed Appalachia for the better instead of leaving it divided out between KY, TN, VA, NC, & WV. OTOH, look how WV turned out, so maybe not. #mightabeen

@kentbrew @cbroome @pluralistic This seems to have significantly worsened in the last few months.Something similar going on on LinkedIn. A job search returns a page of a dozen paid boosted jobs with only a couple actual results mixed in randomly.Everyone taking profits at the expense of their product-"customers".

@stux Social norms of acceptable behavior do not, often, exist online in the same way as offline. Mastodon provides a supportive platform to change that! Now we all have to make it happen. Build a better community! The general guideline isn't difficult: "Don't be a jerk online."(Probably shouldn't be a jerk offline, either... 😉 )#socialnorms

@stux Ok, you've got me curious. Is it real?

@stux Pure genius and a nice scale-up. Do you know if you just load new bricks at the top or if they actually recycle used bricks? Is the "brick pavement" coming out the bottom really full-sized bricks or some simulacrum?

@lauren It astonishes me that people don't get this. Conversing well enough to trick a human isn't difficult. Coming up with meaningful and accurate new content __is__ difficult. #eliza

@jquillin Sleep eastbound towards Europe. Stay awake westbound towards US.

@stux I got an old one from grandparents on my 18th birthday, but I needed it for an out-of-town college. (Thinking back on it now, this might also have been encouraged by my parents to stop my aging granddad's driving. Hmm...)US kids sometimes but not always get "helped" in various ways with their first car by parents/grandparents. This varies by socioeconomic class & circumstances.Used cars have gone through the roof in price in last 2 years, so that may make it rarer.

@stux @BintyMcFrazzles Varies widely by state. On average, at around 16yo you have to take lessons, spend some time driving with a copilot, and pass a test, but the details are all over the place. In no case is this seriously expensive or difficult. Getting a drivers license is pretty easy.

@stux @edgeoforever Having seen the replies to this, you're getting a lot of observer bias from both directions in the answers. Blue cities manage with decent public transport. Everywhere else in America is intentionally designed to require a car.

@jquillin Look out! I put my 9yo kid in a car this morning headed your way (Austin) for spring break w/Grams & Pops. Now Mom & Dad get to party all weekend. And by "party", of course I mean "nap". :-)

@stux This is not a #Kitty friendly game. Our cat says the food and treats should go up 1% per 60 seconds. Or just give her the whole container. Either way is a decent MVP.
