I am becoming increasingly doubtful of #Telegram's background and direction. #WhatsApp is owned by #Meta and just announced that it will introduce ads. So, it looks like I'm left with #Signal and #Matrix. The former has better UX, but it's centralized and US-based. The latter is a bit clumsy but decentralized and EU-based. Neither is perfect, but they are the closest to it for me.#instantmessenger #instantmessaging

#Czechia experienced a major #blackout today, and the fake news scene was full of references to the #GreenDeal and ecocommunism. Eventually, two competing (and contradicting) theories emerged:1) the grid went down because too much power from German wind farms was going to it.2) the grid went down because it wasn't windy in Germany and too much of our energy was going there.In the end, it turned out that the blackout was caused by a downed wire on the main power line. But who cares about the truth these days? 🤷♂️

@electricCZ úplně se mi vybavuje, jak jsem musel jako malý trávit mraky času mícháním rybízové marmelády, aby se v ní cukr rozpustil i zastudena. 🙂

My mother always blamed our generation for being consumerist. She claimed that under the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, their generation had access to far fewer products and still managed to enjoy life.That's why I was quite surprised when she and her boyfriend became completely addicted to shopping at #Temu. They buy cheap crap and don't care because it's so cheap that they can throw it away and buy new stuff right away. Suddenly, it's our generation that looks like the responsible one.

The 10GW data center deal between #Nvidia and #OpenAI seems even crazier when you put it into perspective. Czechia, home to 11 million people and an industrialized economy, has an average electricity consumption of 7 GW. The government subsidizes electromobility and encourages people to insulate their houses, yet it allows this. I hope the #AI bubble bursts before it causes real environmental damage.

In cooperation between @vhsky and @openalt we'd like to demonstrate that even a large-scale conference can be live streamed without #YouTube. An initial stress test showed that 7 concurrent streams in multiple resolutions exceeded the capabilities of the server Vhsky.cz runs on (32core i9-13900 and 96 GB RAM).However, the Fediverse community helps each other. @bycx loaned us a real beast machine which we now use as an external runner for transcoding jobs. @bycx @pemensik @michal plugin hybrid je spalovák s malou baterií. Typicky ti to dovolí jet tak 50 km jen na elektro, takže by to mělo pomoct s emisemi ve městech, ale to by ta baterie musela být nabitá. Teď se řešila studie, podle které majitelé v reálném provozu na baterii skoro nejezdí, protože ji nenabíjejí. Když není nabitá, tak to sice rekuperuje a může to trochu pomáhat při rozjíždění, ale jinak je to spalovák se vším všudy, který může i čoudit, pokud nemá z nějakého důvodu dobré spalování.Podle výpočtů auromobilek měly být plugin hybridy někde na 30 % emisí spalováků, v reálném provozu jsou na 80 %. Podle mě to je slepá ulička a jen umělý pokus, jak si snížit fleetové emise. Asi jako u start-stop, kde si automobilky vyfabulovaly, že to ušetří 5 % paliva a reálně to bylo tak 1 %. Ale fleetové emise se nepočítají z reality, ale z toho, co mají na papíře. Takže jim to posloužilo.

#Meshcore seems to really work as a countrywide network. Today, I chatted with people from Liberec and Krkonoše, which are hundreds of kilometers away, and their messages went through just fine. All of this was possible with cheap, community-built devices.
