Also, many thanks to @xfce for developing libxfce4windowing! We made sure to ask for permission to use it, just to make sure that they're willing to accommodate our use case.

@matrix I don't like the precedent that this sets...

@element @schmittlauch @matrix What the fuck? Really? So the codebase being AGPL is just a marketing stunt to hide the CLA that lets you give others' contributions away as proprietary software?

@element @schmittlauch @matrix In plain terms, you're forking Synapse to profit off of it with the vague assertion that you'll give money back to the Foundation.Eat shit.

@element @schmittlauch @matrix You may have wrote 90% of Synapse, but it really must hurt to have made open contributions that you couldn't directly profit off of... The language from the Foundation isn't ambiguous, you used your position as leverage to take these projects out from under their steward, ENTIRELY to make money off of them. I don't care how you justify it, it's unacceptable.

@element @schmittlauch @matrix Sure, until you start making a profit. Then "so we can keep the lights on" turns into "so we can shore up our reserves", then "so we can fund an IPO", then "so we can keep our promises to our shareholders". Have you really not noticed the patterns in the industry? Are you that certain that you're immune to them?

@matrix I understand the decision to shutter the bridge, but I am disappointed. I had been using the official bridge for years now to communicate with the others @archlinux and other channels like #wlroots. Fortunately, Arch has its own bridge, so I can still use Matrix for that!

@element Thank you for taking our advice and updating the CLA to prevent your organization from ever putting third-party contributions made in good faith behind a proprietary paywall. I still don't believe that the ends justify the means, but I'm more or less okay with these ends.

@gfxstrand I'm really excited about NVK. My main reason for avoiding NVIDIA cards in general has been their driver situation on Linux, and I feel as though the work by you and all the other Nouveau and NVK developers may finally bring NVIDIA cards to the table for me!

@karolherbst Is it better to do operations with a fractional field (e.g. $128.64 becomes 128 in one var and 64 in the other), or just do everything in one field (e.g. $128.64 becomes 12864 in a single var)? I've wondered about that for a while.

@karolherbst Sure, but in e.g. C, one would need to implement that themselves if they were unable to use any external libraries. I'm just curious about the upsides and downsides to each approach.

@emersion I say keep it simple. If you're already doing the "slow period to fix bugs" thing for wlroots, you may as well tag an RC at the start of that slow period, and maybe tag new RCs every N weeks until you're satisfied with its stability. For example, you could finalize the feature set and API in 0.19, tag 0.19.0-rc1, and then tag new RCs every 2 weeks until there are no more blocking bugs—THEN tag 0.19.0 in place of a final RC.(1/2)

@emersion By formalizing the slow period and making it obvious to downstreams, you would make it easier for us to jump onto a new version of wlroots before release. This benefits us by helping us line up a new release of our compositors with the new version of wlroots, and benefits you guys by giving us incentive to file bugs against release candidates. I've started collecting element cubes. 1cm³ each. I have 19 of them so far—the list is in the alt text if you don't feel like zooming in. I'm hoping to build this out over time.

@frameworkcomputer My friend Aidan streams at twitch.tv/bigbadbeaver. Mostly Project Zomboid and a bit of The Finals. He's a great guy.
