@deevybee A cautionary tale for the entire system - research councils, university managers, politicians. They will blame "bad apples". But, we have set up a system designed for enshittification. And it all comes from imagining that a "market-like" system based around indicators would make things more "efficient" and "productive".Read this and weep. https://forbetterscience.com/2024/05/27/superconductive-witch-hunt/

I've only just spotted the list of new FRS's for 2024. Some great chemists: Simon Aldridge (synthetic inorganic dude, very cool), Patrick Unwin (brilliantly clever electrochemist), Ad Bax (NMR pulse sequences to live and die by), Donna Blackmond (who does really clever origin of life/chirality work), Stuart Rowan (supramolecular chemistry) . And then there are Anthony Fauci and Andrew Pollard (as in viruses and vaccines)And last but not least @MichaelEMannTop choices.

Just been sent a copy of The Sixth Element - How Carbon Shapes our World to review. Flipped through it casually and found this superb graphic which is worth the price of the book alone. If you can't work out why I'm so impressed read the ALT text. #climatechange

@arcana I'd cut emissions first. And there's a vast amount of waste that is ripe for the plucking. it's what i've been working on for the last while. As to nuclear. It may take some time. And that's one thing we don't have much of. Cut the emissions now.

@arcana I would love to have more forest. But when you read John Vaillant's Fire Weather you realise that if you don't cut the CO2 at source any effort you might make to plant to trees may be for nothing. It' s a great, terrifying book, well worth reading more than once.

@aral I think you should expand that to Science AND Technology are political. There is no greater indication of the fact that certain politicians attack the science they find unpalatable.

Just Stop Oil protestors are jailed for four years for talking about blocking roads. In other news, a man gets a two year suspended sentence (plus 150 hours of community service) for putting a bottle of aluminium phosphide in his luggage, flying it to the UK, and then sprinkling it around, killing an 11 year old neighbour. She died of poisoning by phosphine gas.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/jul/18/london-woman-who-killed-neighbour-11-with-bedbug-poison-spared-jail

No, BBC. Please. RFK Junior is not a "sceptic". He's a rabid disinformer and denier. Don't use euphemisms.

It is with great sadness that I am doing what I would once have thought unthinkable. Following Salim Abdool Karim's superb Faraday Lecture 10 days ago, i have decided to return my own Faraday prize, awarded in 2014. The silence of the Royal Society in the face of Elon Musk's rampage (a member of the RS since 2018) across US science is incomprehensible to me. We must all draw the line somewhere in the face of authoritarian attacks and this is mine. https://www.ft.com/content/877853df-1687-4d1f-940b-9eefc0cf69c0?accessToken=zwAAAZdYtYr2kdOHeFPfFodNH9OUC57vwM9pwA.MEUCIQDNG6kcQyHa-g6Kx4G9NHE2ofD36kR8OX0yEu-KfXlV0QIgcmMFKTaT90y42QfwQTWb05khk6thpQPe-JvIGkaZzQY&segmentId=e95a9ae7-622c-6235-5f87-51e412b47e97&shareType=enterprise&shareId=5fbecded-0dc9-419a-b064-cda0dee0d73a

A little more about why I returned the #RoyalSociety Faraday Prize, with a question for everyone to ponder. #Muskhttps://www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/why-i-returned-the-faraday-prize-to-the-royal-society/4021668.article

I'm distinctly underwhelmed by the new Astronomer Royal's line of argument when she says that Musk should his Royal Society fellowship because the reason he was awarded it in the first place have not changed… Read the article and judge for yourselves. Maybe she could have been asked some slightly more challenging questions. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2025/aug/01/royal-society-elon-musk-astronomer-royal-michele-dougherty

This article, in which Paul Nurse compares Elon Musk with Isaac Newton (“a nasty piece of work”), leaves me completely speechless. I don’t even know where to start. https://www.ft.com/content/088b804f-15e0-4a8e-b32d-146a826b8d6c?shareType=nongift
