Yesterday I learned that SpongeBob SquarePants is named “Bob l’éponge” in French and while this makes a lot of sense, it’s also surprisingly funny to me.

This technically ticks the box, I suppose, but what a shameful display of doing the least possible work to call yourself “accessible”. Because of the useless repetition, I think it might even be better to NOT include these trash alt tags. Can’t even imagine how infuriating it must be to have a screen reader say “Display images to show real-time content”, over and over, if that’s your only way of navigating. This is absolute garbage behaviour, Old Navy (Canada). Your customers deserve better.

Google’s reCAPTCHA has pretty much stopped working for me in Firefox. It will just ask me to train its driver vision thing over and over. If I happen to get into the other “type” (the “elimination” kind), it works after a few rounds. The “click all squares that have part of a motorcycle” kind seems to never have an end.I need to use this system to do all kinds of stuff online, including even logging in to Air Canada.Forcing me to use a bad third party vendor like this is really garbage.

Well, I can’t log in to Air Canada at all now. The CAPTCHA keeps failing. The assistive type (the audio type) doesn’t even TRY to work. And this is in Safari where I have no blockers. This BS should be illegal. I should not have to do free machine vision training labour just to use my airline!

Remember when software publishers made an effort to make their documentation available for use offline? That was cool.(About to get on a flight and wanted to download the docs for an open source library that’s pretty new to me. I don’t see a way of doing that short of crawling a few dozen (hundred?) HTML pages, or maybe building the docs from the source, myself. Situations like this always remind me how proud I was—and should be—about the work we did on the #PHP manual, way back.)

Kid’s playing Infinite Craft (a game where you can combine “anything” to make new things, like “mountain” + “fire” = “volcano”)…> This one is *Infinite*. Like you can make anything. Even “Elon Musk”!> Cool; let me know when you get “disregard for the other people” and “daddy’s emerald mine”.

In October 2020 I installed two Samsung SSDs as cache devices in my NAS box (Synology DS918+).In the past 2 weeks, *both* of them failed. I suspect it’s because I have my security cameras writing to the NAS storage, and this crept my writes up to their 100% lifespan. No data loss because they’re cache devices only; my real data is on spinning disk.I’m actually impressed that they failed at just about the same time. A good reminder to replace failing spinning disks immediately.

Follow up with the obvious request: anyone have a good recommendation on reasonably-priced NVMe storage that has a very high write lifespan? 500GB-1TB probably. Averaging $50/year (for the pair) isn’t the end of the world, but replacing them is a hassle.Bonus Internet points if it’s on this list: https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=drives&model=DS918%2B&category=m2_ssd_internal

I mean, good for them (seriously), but it’s truly hard to believe that the sometimes-janky ruby-amounts-of-slow VM launcher that I did awful things to in order to hack it into submission for things like custom DNS resolution and automatic VPN connections to the host, 10+ years ago—Vagrant—has hard-work-bloomed into a company that IBM acquired for 6.4 billion-with-a-b dollars.(Glad we’re not using their stuff right now, but truly happy for the #HashiCorp founders.)https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ibm-to-acquire-hashicorp-inc-creating-a-comprehensive-end-to-end-hybrid-cloud-platform-302126646.html

@foone Proprietary-shaped (with extra low-current high-voltage pins) USB-A connector on the device side, inverted USB-B connector on the host side. Box contains 17 adaptor dongles; none of them fit quite right.

If no one at your restaurant, from the line cook all the way to the hands that bring this to the table, have the authority or aptitude to reject a broken hollandaise, maybe don’t charge $24 for a breakfast plate. When people say “half of all restaurants fail in the first year”, I maintain that this is because people are bad at running more than half of all restaurants. End rant. (-:

@magicalthinking Unfortunately, yes. It's really not the kids working there that are the problem, it's the lack of adult supervision. We paid, tipped, and simply won't return.

@magicalthinking Look, I think tipping is a really stupid thing we do as a society, but it is part of the social contract when going to a restaurant. I wish we collectively didn't do it at all, but we do.

@picofarad Thanks; there’s plenty of stuff like that around. This is a medium density urban environment. They’ve just taken a liking to my light strings this season for some reason.

@kyle @gizmomathboy If it’s anything like what happened to beer, there will be some pretty serious over-production. I can buy 3 Fonteinen Golden Blend off the shelf, here (and kind of everywhere), now, and that was unheard of 5+ years ago.(I’m sure it “helps” that other countries aren’t buying [as much] American liquor as they were before Feb 2025… we certainly aren’t up here in Canada.)
