@cregox @captainepoch oh yeah i meant mail, not webmail π€¦migadu looks like a very nice provider, it's certainly my fallback option should mailbox.org fail. i'm using the contact and calendar sync from mailbox, though, so i'd also need to find replacements for those π

@cregox @captainepoch i'm already using davx5 to sync them. mailbox offers carddav and caldav on top of mail, which is very convenient π
don't know if there are any card/caldav providers so that you can get it separate from your mail. what are you using?

@captainepoch @cregox selfhosting is of course also a valid option as always πthough i'm not sure if i trust myself enough to take care of syncing my calendar and keeping proper backups. i got appointments years in the future and it would be really bad if i lost those π¬

@captainepoch @cregox i used to selfhost more things, but i tend to make my setup more minimal and only selfhost what's truely necessary and easily maintainable.the complexity of backups really depends on the software you're trying to backup. e.g. once you get into sql databases (except sqlite) you need to spend some time to create a proper backup script and even more to actually test restoring your backup once you're done. so start from a base system, install everything from scratch and try to restore.additionally, you need to spend time to keep everything up to date and do necessary migrations, especially when you're opening up ports on your home ip (which i'd strongly advise against either way, it's better to use zerotier or some vpn).for me it's not worth the hassle most of the time, when there are better commercial alternatives that know their shit π

@captainepoch @cregox 1 week's a bit more than 5 minutes, isn't it? π it's totally fine if you enjoy it and do it as some kind of hobby, but it is certainly not the best option for people that do not like to take care of these things.i still remember when i selfhosted seafile and wanted to test my backup and couldn't get seafile working on the "newer" version of python2 provided on my fresh debian install. it was hell π considering the amount of time needed for these kind of things, it's not even worth it in terms of monetary value, to be honest.

@captainepoch @cregox > It is, because that's when I started from scratch, it's obvious it took more time than doing that simple script for backups :comfy:yeah, but the problem with backups is that you need to completely trust them. so you can't really skip the other steps, like verifying the backup, so it will take a bit of your time.> I do it because it doesn't take too much time of my life and I have everything automated with email reports, ...once you're there you've probably already invested enough so that it is sustainable. then it makes sense to keep going π

i've just been testing out #proxmox, but it keeps dropping the network connection for me after a few minutes π #xcp-ng on the other hand, works perfectly fine. i guess i'll continue my journey with that one.

@captainepoch which distro are you using then? alpine already needs 512mb officially and i don't want to push it πcontainers are a better choice for my scenario either way, though.

@captainepoch already spent time testing my setup on podman, so i'll start with that π
i guess it's also more relevant in a professional context (given it's compatibility to docker), so that's another plus.

i made a thing!modded a broken ds lite to a gameboy macro :)although the screen is brighter and crisper it really destroys the mood for gloomy games like castlevania, so it will probably not completely replace my original advance sp.for other games it works quite well π

@kaia @hj @sun the german word "panzerschokolade" (tank chocolate) was just another name for crystal meth during the second world war, where it was used by soldiers. it didn't have anything to do with actual chocolate.people seem to confuse it with "fliegerschokolade" (pilot chocolate) which was another name for scho-ka-kola, which indeed is actual chocolate π
