gargron is now on record as saying that the mastodon api is only for mastodonhttps://mastodon.social/@Gargron/101489738840502100what this basically means is that the mastodon ecosystem of apps, helpful tools, etc will only ever be reliably compatible with mastodon with the rest of us jumping through hoops to try to reverse engineer itso, in summary, a community that is allegedly federated actually does have an avenue through which one platform can control it. just fact.makes u think?

just a psa to no one in particular, bc this keeps happening to me and it's really frustrating:white people, please consider that when you correct the word usage or provide brusque corrections of someone from another culture, you're punching down.pretend every other sentence that you said was interrupted by someone telling you that you're wrong. now. pretend this is continuous and unavoidable.that's how it often is to be a minority in a white space. the fediverse is a white space.

@ky0ko very good, ky0ko but did you remember to compile python before you started compiling this python so that you could compile python pythonically?

the notes that i keep for my activitypub implementation are beginning to look like the journal of a cultist seeking treasures from eldritch ruins - 'secret keys and signs', 'conventions', 'other mappings', 'important resources', 'routes'this is all rather like a strange, twisted adventure

@Lumb hmmm, ok that's really really strangei will say that i noticed some federated timeline quirks as well when i tried pleroma, but i didn't end up having the patience to solve them or ask for help, tbh

@lynnesbian @ben some things are adopted as standard practices without some standards body enforcing the conventions and that is fine, organic and completely validif every single programming convention had to have a corresponding standard before being adopted, then we would still be using assembly due to the tremendous friction that this would add to the development of software

when a white person says that they're "color blind" in response to discussion about racism, they think that they're saying "i am a tolerant person."however, what they're actually saying is "i can't see racism, so i won't acknowledge it", which is a really messed up way to look at the worldclosing our eyes and putting our heads in the sand doesn't make something go away. racism is here to stay until it is acknowledged, explicitly called out by name, and strongly addressed in every community.

perceived or real skill in programming does not suddenly give anyone the right to forego basic empathy.the caustic, casually denigrating culture that infests computer science has got to go. rampant toxicity, in the long run, leads to stagnation in software development, because everyone that isn't steeped in that culture gets pushed out.

after a long 10+ year journey as a hackintosh user, i think i am gonna walk awaythe ports systems are a bit stale, the os as a whole is no longer even remotely stable (hasn't been for a while), and the move towards locking down the dev environment is annoyingso, out with the old, in with.... probably the old. i think i'll go back to windows. i thought about using arch, but i had fun with the whole do-it-yourself linux thing back in the early 90s and i don't have the spoons for that anymore

@shadow8t4 i not only used mint but also rolled my own ubuntu-like a Long Time Ago (tm). i literally used to try every single distribution and tinkered with them all way too muchi ended up disliking mint. i just felt like it had debian's cumbersomeness under the hood and none of the benefits that are usually offered in return (stability, predictability, well documented approaches).

@shadow8t4 that's kinda where i'm at right now to be honest. i feel like a version of arch with tested, version-locked releases would be my dream distributionBUT - it doesn't exist. someone should make this.

@shadow8t4 i would be down for that, except that the stigma of using something that "makes arch linux easy" actually gets on my nervesit would be better if it just set its tone based on its own merits. instead, i can see myself catching bad vibes from the Serious Arch Linux Users because i'm using arch with training wheels.the deep irony here? none of the people that are self-declared hardcore arch people could have survived the linux scene back in 1992. lmfao. arch isn't hard. that was hard

@shadow8t4 hehehe, i like you then - that's a good philosophyfor the same reason, i'm inclined towards windows. if i'm gonna go ease-of-use might as well go the whole wayi consider myself retired from the linux desktop scene, but i will always be supportive of it

honestly, my take on the fbi is that anyone that works for or with them is a cop, because they arei like my simple non-nuanced take. it helps me keep perspectivei know some peeps are talking about technicalities, but do you think that the feds give af when they come after oppressed communities?there's a lot of history there, and lots of valid reasons for the bad vibes. to ignore it all bc someone is only "affiliated" with a horrifically bad organization seems like a pointless distinction
