@battlepenguin Premise: Uncle Sam funds new wars by issuing bonds, not by raising taxes. China has been buying US bonds by boatloads, because they have an export surplus and Chinese people are savers. Thus China funded Afghanistan and Iraq misadventures in a big way, although indirectly.

@ninapaley Have you read "The Righteous Mind"? I like Jonathan Haidt's explanation that morality and tribalism is what binds us and blinds us.

@djsumdog Many stores in Toronto had "we are all in this together" signs early on. Most of them disappeared after a few months of fourteen days to flatten the curve. 🙂 I love SD too. Spent Christmas of 2013 in Aberdeen, and learned that folks there do not leave homes or cars locked. When leaving, our friend's dad lent us his car to go to the airport, and asked us to leave the key in the ignition. That trust is truly precious.Took a road trip in 2019. Loved the nice SD people even more.

@djsumdog Uhh, sorry about the poorly constructed sentences. Evidently you understood. 🙂 I meant to say that our friend's dad asked us to leave the car in the airport's parking lot, with key in ignition. Someone would pick up the car later.I saw unlocked homes and cars in rural Maine too. In one such place a small store was the community hub. Children played outside, adults came and went. That got me thinking about the value of social trust, and its place in small town and rural America.

@djsumdog Tucker Carlson did a segment on why more "room" is good.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ka7zKnzEfsI'm two minds about this. I love small town America, but I also think that well-designed density is a good thing. It leaves more room for farms and forests. Dense cities are cheaper to run. They allow for better co-operation. Response to Covid-19 and various other politically rooted problems (riots, lawlessness) has distorted things severely, but I'm sure this pendulum too will swing the other way.

@djsumdog My latest move is to Houston, from Toronto. I miss Toronto, although we were locked down and isolated during most of our time there. I miss the good public transit, walkability, lively street life, beautiful old buildings, ubiquitous street art, nice green spaces, and seasons. Bad drivers, homelessness, and surrounding sprawl are what I used to complain about. 🙂But I think I miss the smaller Indiana towns the most.

@djsumdog T-Mobile does require VoLTE, as of August 2020 or some such date.I have a Sony Xperia X that I've used with T-Mobile during 2018-2019. Then I went to Canada for a couple of years, came back, and learned that my old phone will not work anymore with T-Mobile. I could get on the network at the store, but they kicked me out later that evening.About their pre-paid plans, the thing you want to look up is "T-Mobile Connect". It is pretty well-hidden in their website.

@pasture @alex Cool, thank you! Would you be able to import a mastodon instance? I'm trying to figure out if I can do this myself. Found https://gitlab.com/soapbox-pub/migrator but also a little concerned by the fact that there's no new activity there in the last two years. 🙂

@alex Some people would argue that the real power belongs to trillionaire families that fly under the radar, and not individual billionaires -- the Rothschilds being the most bandied about name.I personally don't have a clue, and I certainly don't know if the above is true. The world is too complex a place for me, and too many random events are set off all the time. Folks perceive whatever patterns they want, depending on their orientation.

@fitheach I've been consistently disappointed with SoundCore products. Hope your experience is better!Every one of them I've owned worked fine in the beginning but soon began to act up: dead battery in portable speaker, frayed earbuds cable, broken headphone parts, hissing from the replacement headphone when ANC is on...My 13-year old Sony MDR-7506 still works great. Bargain bin Philips speaker has a stutter, but hasn't fallen apart. I'll pony up a little more next time.

@fitheach So sorry that I didn't get to telepathically communicate with you before you made the purchase!I've been eyeing Marshall speakers, but they are not priced anywhere close to £27. 😟

@parker Geography seems to be a big omission. Geology too. Cartography is in the list, so maybe I misunderstood you?Global trade. The flows of goods, capital, and people (and diseases!) across the world have a greater bearing on our lives than generally appreciated.Business. Look into Cole Summers' book, if you haven't heard of him already.
