@yuri @sim when the shops ask for my address i'm usually like "no thank you" and they look at me like the autist i really am. god forbid a shop i rarely shop at doesn't get to foist their membership (and really, "voluntary" advertising) upon me just because i wanted something from that one store

is the only real reason to avoid freebsd the non-technical politicking or is it also dying a slow and painful death in desktop just like desktop linux seems to be? i want to decide how to get my system set up For Real and not feel like a dingus so i can stop spending so much time struggling and shitposting. i am still willing to migrate back to linux if that means setting things up will be less obtuse etc etc1590006746072.jpg

@tuxcrafting openbsd also just werks but the quirks are getting a bit obtuse for my liking when it comes to trying to set shit up like openjdk and mono and the eternal DRMâ„¢. might just be a sign i'm a bsdlet tho lol

@weeb if only ubuntu wasn't such a bloated mess where i'd have to manually install fucking synaptic for a gui package manager and work around forced snap packaging

@tuxcrafting my disdain for ohio runs deep since it is a direct neighbor of west virginia. you see a fuckin idiot on the road? 4 out of 5 times they're from Ohio

@Majkatsu there is but it's very much a thing where you have to be willing to do a lot of fiddling, or use a virtual machine. depends on the version of mac os, contemporary/intel versions require significantly more fiddling than PowerPC versions, especially if it's post-big cat name OS X

@Majkatsu it's definitely possible to use a vm for contemporary mac os, but as i said it's annoying as fuck to fiddle with manually to get it just right, but it's been done. if i had the links handy i'd share what i've found. there's a script for setting up virtualbox for a contemporary os x vm, and the other link is a preconfigured sheepsaver mac os 9 setup(sorry if i misunderstood your request, i'm just kinda infodumping)

@Majkatsu there's a windows program for sheepsaver iirc. sheepsaver only does up to mac os x 10.5 (the last powerpc osx) but i personally haven't seen that put into practice, to be honest with you. people have cracked os x as well so that it skips the hardware checks, and people have found ways to get vms to cheese the hardware requirements, but it's still not exactly a science. speaking of which, i keep putting off trying to emulate contemporary os x for myself, but then again most of my interest is 1) nostalgic and 2) more aimed at PowerPC as opposed to contemporary Intel 🤔🤔🤔

@Majkatsu while i was at college there was a mac section of the computer lab with the whole adobe cc suite, which is pretty comical bc that's the only thing they were really there for. didn't get to fiddle much with them, but i did work on a couple of class projects with them nonetheless, and it's a weird mix of "oh hey i remember this" and "WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY DO TO MY CHILDHOOD HOUSE". modern macs are very inoffensive looking, neither good nor bad, just sorta... there. if they weren't so expensive and slowly getting shittier i'd probably own an intel mac tbh

@Majkatsu this reminds me that i need to see if this PowerPC emac actually works, bc if it does i will be enjoying nostalgia

@Majkatsu be careful with shipping because the desktops are fuckin heavy and fragile. i bought a secondhand g3 and it came to me broken :'( go with a laptop if you can, they're less likely to be damaged by the shipping process 🤔
