Hey @whvholst @edri any of you have a good source on what are the possible directions the #chatcontrol thing can go? I understand the idea might be to make it mandatory, but any info on what the practicalities of that would be?

Based on this poll where all of 40 people voted I surmise that on fedi there are more young Poles than Icelanders.Pretty sure this is a perfectly airtight conclusion. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

@tindall I think that's a dangerous idea. We'd be giving up on the most crucial tenet of free software, without gaining actually anything.First of all, BSD/MIT crowd will still be fine with whatever happens to their code, so plenty of stuff to train Copilot on.Secondly, we lose the main benefit of free software: empowering software users and developers.Big Tech won't care either way.

@tindall instead, I feel it is possible to make a case that Copilot regurgitates free software code verbatim, and that there is no way to tell which code is regurgitated, and which is actually "derived" and created by Copilot, because Microsoft itself doesn't have the software bill of materials, so to speak. That would make Copilot toxic to closed-source companies. Effectively, they could not be *sure* they are not using an AGPL'd piece of code. That's terrifying to them!

@tindall everyone is always sure that free software will lose every battle. I am not going to get distracted by that.

@nolan > Facebook's engineers are world-class; surely they have the skills to support the DOM standard. Enough of the excuses, come and join us at the table. Facebook can do this. But do they want to do it?Wow, some people still believe Facebook wants open standards. How quaint!

@kmic @timorl shameless plug, .IS is pretty good too (disclaimer: I do information security for .IS). If you want to know how we do (some) things, here's the CTO talking:https://server.vpnwp.com/proxmox/june-2021-freebsd-developer-summit-icelandic-dns-registry/We do contribute to FLOSS, for example here's my work project:https://gitlab.com/isnic/proberIf .IS is not your thing, https://njal.la might be what you're after. Created by Peter Sunde of The Pirate Bay fame, and pretty solid from what I've seen.

@kmic @timorl you're not wrong, but that was just an example. We contribute on a regular basis to FreeBSD and other FLOSS projects we use. For instance:https://www.freshports.org/devel/py-proxmoxer/https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/commit/?id=57eabeb80b69fef8515cf0c23b27187e006f843fThese are often bugfixes scattered across a lot of projects. We're a small team, but we do try to give back to the community.

Dear #fediverse, I am preparing to migrate my account off of mastodon.social and onto mastodon.technology. Here's the new me: @rysiek@mastodon.technology It's been a long time coming and I should have done that a while ago - keeping fedi healthy means moving away from huge instances.Admittedly m.t is also substantial, but it's an order of magnitude smaller than m.s. So, there's that.At some point this account will be made to redirect to the m.t one, and then eventually the profile will move. :blobwizard:

@tek those insanely loud cars and motorbikes being paraded in cities always strike me as compensation mechanism. As in, how insecure must a person be to feel the need for that kind of display? My first thought when I notice those on the street is: damn, that guy's junk must be tiny!(and yes, it's almost always a guy; go figure)

@jeffcliff @bortzmeyer @ghostdancer I see you're referring to one of Google Jigsaw projects? Jigsaw is a team at Google, not a project: https://jigsaw.google.com/Also, Zuckerberg doesn't have anything to do with it.No need to mix things up...
