Ok, time for #introduction. I was born and raised in #Utrecht the #Netherlands, trained in #chemistry specializing in molecular structure with X-ray crystallography. After a 4y postdoc in bioinformatics at #EMBL in Heidelberg I worked in industry first as application programmer (4y) and then R&D manager (8y). Since 2009 in #academic #bioinformatics #research infrastructure. Work for Dutch infrastructure for health data. Live in Hoek van Holland. Interests: #photography #technology #science

@danak6jq @carlsonj yup. Next to the paper “repaired by” label in the SW corner, the board is marked “Memory”. This must be one of the first chip memories, because as far as I remember it was from the same machine that also had the (slightly older) core memory card. Check out the 2 W resistors…

@danak6jq @brouhaha I worked for an organisation with a VAX 9000 in 1993. While that machine was in the machine room, I had a 200 MHz DEC Alpha under my desk that blew away everything else in the building. When the 9000 was taken apart, I took one module of the four that made up a CPU home; I brought that to a museum last year (together with some DG Nova stuff I had lying around)

@danak6jq @brouhaha This was the VAX9000 module. I guess it measures about 12 cm on a side, weight approximately 2 kg? I remember there were four of these on each of the two CPU boards.

@grammargirl @jzitt @stephenjbell This is not a retronym, but The Netherlands, quite a while ago, had a government formation period that was called “digital” just because it was different from usual: it was not “analog(ous)” to the ones we were used to.

@petergleick Why is a “flare” described in this piece as a methane emission? It is correct that methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but a good “methane flare” emits carbon dioxide, not methane. Still a waste if it can be avoided, but a lot less warming.Note avoiding flares is not always possible if they are there to prevent pressure buildup in a chemical plant. (I can see at least 5 flares usually from my living room window…)

@aral It’s not so far away though with https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudewijn_Poelmann who built up quite a fortune selling his philanthropic lottery concept.

@ericphelps Flat is the trademark of The Netherlands, and being used to flat land as a Dutchman makes one realise that options for land-based movement are often dictated by water (bridges and tunnels). Long sections of bicycle paths that do not *cross* the water are *along* dikes and waterways.

@aral Siri can be trained to recognize your voice. And in some security cases it asks to unlock your phone.

@1br0wn I am still using the mac, but have liberated a lot of my data by installing my own @nextcloud server on a raspberry pi 5 at home. Now have my own cloud shopping list, agenda, etc shared with my wife without any of the big cloud services. Can video-call with my friends and colleagues without Zoom/Teams. Also moved my #RSS synchronization in house already. Migrating clients is a next step to think about, but becomes a lot less nightmary with pre-liberated data.
