There doesn't appear to be a backoff on this. If you try to login on the bird site it DOS's itself and just keeps sending requests until it dies. :birdsite:

@simon This doesn't really solve the problem, especially since OpenAI is advocating for more uses via their API. The output of these models has to be addressed and that's not something a web UX change can fix. The technology platform itself is unfit for the applications it is being used for.

@simon I think for that de-personifying output would be more effective. Using it pronouns and "this generative AI model" instead of a branded humanlike personification that it does now.To be clearer: I'd like the output of the model to be modified to clarify the AIs intentions and capabilities and very explicitly refer to itself as a computer algorithm and machine.

@simon Wait, Google Domains is going away? Shoot. I guess I'll need to start looking as well. Did they send out a notification about this? I haven't gotten anything.

@mjg59 I'm more disappointed in the advocates still on that platform. Your advocating for diversity and inclusion and then building your audience from people who think this is OK? Like this isn't even remotely the first hint at this stance.

@LilahTovMoon I'm not sure I see a way Threads could implement ActivityPub in a way that respected what exists here already. Fundamentally their moderation is incompatible with basically everything here. It seems like them doing that is closer to Truth social technically being on the fediverse than everything we're using now.

@clive hear me out though, to get cars off the road what if we incentivized bikes, e-bikes and subsidized city transit like trains and busses. You could even incentivize people to move closer to resources by subsidizing rent in cities. All of that seems better than the current infatuation with cars. Heck, you could probably even plant some trees and close a few roads with that plan.

@JJROKCZ @clive I don't think this is true. Yes our cities were designed for cars but if you close a bunch of streets and turn them into greenways and community spaces those can fill that density need through public markets, parks etc. We just need less roads. This approach seems much easier than fundamentally redesigning cities and has already been done in places like Minneapolis (the Nicollet Avenue project/Greenway)Reducing intersections optimizes car traffic as well.

@JJROKCZ @clive like imagine if your city had a green walkable park without cars that you could bike or walk down and had permenant farmers markets running there with outdoor dining etc along the way.

@simon it was really nice to see Google copy Bings use of it. It only working in Chromium and Safari browsers though makes it problematic.

@simon Do you think that as Copilot and others AI tools that scrape documentation are sold to managers as a replacement for this kind of knowledge that adoption of this idea will be impeded?Struggling to see why leaders would choose to do this when this is what Copilot is advertised to provide to their teams?

@simon I think most engineers would agree! But we aren't the ones with the money. Our leadership teams are spending multi-millions of dollars on Copilot because it is supposed to provide this, I already have gotten push back from similar ideas to "use Copilot instead". It seems like as those technologies grow the emphasis and money will encourage leaning on them - not maintainers. Arguably theres some competitive advantage for companies with technically competent leaders to avoid that tho.

@simon this is a fascinating example, your AI replaced black people with white guys. A fantastic example of the harm these models pose.

@simon I guess I'm just not convinced that even if the prompt actually worked that erasing people and how they present and replacing them with facsimile would be a representation of diversity in any meaningful way and instead seems to outright misunderstand it.I do not think the prompts you share in that article suggest that Open AI understands this distinction either.
