@aral This may reveal my ignorance, but can Windows or MacOS be installed and run on a tablet? Or do tablets have to run a tablet-specific OS?

@media_dept Linux distros arent like Windows or Apple...theres no central company employing hundreds of workers. Often just a guy piecing components together that were made by other guys...from home. So there's not really anything to be green. You'll be happy with Cinnamon Mint. Heres some history behind Mint if you're interested:https://www.networkworld.com/article/681362/software-q-a-clement-lefebvre-the-man-behind-linux-mint.html

@aral Totally! I edited my post b/c I meant to say "most" arent companies but that most are linked back to the companies in some way or another. I.e. it's complicated.

When I watch students working on a document that needs to be saved, more often than not they click File > Save rather than click the associated icon (the icon of a diskette/floppy disk). I'm sure it must be because they have no earthly idea what the icon represents. Anyone born after 2000 almost certainly has never seen one in the wild.https://engines.egr.uh.edu/episode/2791

Female velvet ants are wingless. Males of some species are wingless also, but most are winged. This one is Myrmilloides grandiceps, and is the first one of this species that I've seen.#VelvetAnts #Insects #MacroPhotography

@reverend I settled in with Mint Cinnamon after trying several others (including Plasma). It just felt more comfortable for me. What should a newcomer use? It depends. If the newcomer is computer-adept, they should shop around (it's like dating) by watching some YouTube videos, installing several alternatives, and then settle in with what *you* like best. If you want to be told what to use, go with Mint Cinnamon (because I said so). 😀

@drmambobob It would be impossible for me. I've had to do two, but told dept head I'd rather avoid that in the future. How did you end up in this horrible situation?

I ran across this fantastic scientific illustration on Wikimedia: dissection of the European garden spider Araneus diadematus (=Epeira diadema), circa 1902.The artist, Paul Pfurtscheller (1855-1927), taught biology classes until his retirement in 1911. His artwork was done in the form of wall charts to support his teaching lessons. #NaturalHistory #Nature #Spiders

@futurebird I forget this is an issue, until I use a browser on a computer that isn't my own. On my computers, I set this as my default search engine and none of that stuff happens: https://tedium.co/2024/05/17/google-web-search-make-default/Who knows how long this option will exist....but use it while it's available!

Our university's webpage management system won't allow us to add or update a webpage (including our faculty pages) which include the banned words (such as "inclusive"). If we have a journal title with those words, even if it's about bacteria, we have to use an alternative symbol in the banned word that eludes the surveillance algorithm.#HigherEd #Academia #AcademicChatter

The mimics and the mimicked. Note how the spider and the beetle not only are reddish brown with black at posterior end but they both have two white perpendicular dashes that separate these colors. These white dashes probably make them look like they have a waist like the carpenter ant.I observed these today on a hike at a local state park. Species names are in the alt tags.#spider #beetle #ant #NaturalHistory #Nature #biodiversity #ecology #Macrophotography

I've been a practicing scientist since 1990, and it never ceases to amaze me just how much time it takes to pull together a journal manuscript. These two figures alone took about 16 hours (it's how I spent this weekend)--and that doesn't count the time spent practicing to get to the point that I could get this quality of images. Whew! Done! These are the palps and epigyne of wolf spiders, documenting a new species. #spiders #nature #science #biology

In the figure with 8 epigyne, the structures that looks like a shadow-puppet rabbits are where the sperm is stored in the female. The complex apparatus within the male palp has to be inserted into the epigyne and these sperm receptacles filled up--hopefully before the female decides she's hungry or annoyed.
