almanac press is collecting instances of people who also got scammed by Motto books (https://www.instagram.com/p/CxulEH6Izn5/). It is widely known in the art/design/diy book scene as a shop which doesn't pay the creators. They take many works on consignment but then ghost the authors/publishers.Yet somehow they can persist this scheme based on a combination of cultural capital, FOMO and desperate work conditions (sounds like other abusive relationships doesn't it?) and are even opening up a new store in Paris.almanac press started a document where people can list what they are owed, it is currently at 190k euros. They use #ponzimotto and #boycottmottohttps://lite.framacalc.org/mbw3wcgd3i-a3ia@then and me 'sold' 50 copies of https://test.roelof.info/projects/rd/ and despite repeated attempts at contact we never hear from them anymore and we have an open invoice since 2016.

"This report argues that consumer technology reviewers have failed their basic nominal purpose of critiquing tools. Instead, inspired by values introduced by Apple in the late 1990s, the tech review industry prioritizes aesthetic lust as the primary critical factor for evaluating objects. The reification of these values in their scoring system is transmitted to consumers and manufacturers alike. Like other prurient things, the objects designed within this paradigm are optimized not for usefulness but for photogenic and telegenic properties, a framework that finds its fullest realization in YouTube reviews and unboxing videos. There, even the intimation of critical rigor within tech reviewing vanishes, the smartphone becomes the center of gravity, and manufacturers are even further incentivized to design products for end consumers who are less users than viewers."https://components.one/posts/the-new-pornographers-tech-reviews#consumerism #technology

Smartphone manufacturers have recently begun announcing they will support their newer models of phones with at least five years of software updates. They like you to believe they are taking responsibility by themselves at the benefit of us the consumer. The reality is that the new EU #Ecodesign guidelines are forcing them to do this if they want to stay on the European market: https://repair.eu/news/new-eu-rules-smartphones-and-tablets-will-follow-new-ecodesign-requirements-by-june-2025/ via @jessika_richter

This piece about bitcoin mining and noise pollution has such a density to it.. the notion of noise pollution and its effectsthe way the mine looks, where it is, why it is there and how it sustains and necessitates fossil fuel plantsthe way the noise pollution wilts humans, animals and the trees and how the article centers discusses them (that portrait of the atrophying dog) the former oathkeeper, trying to address it but so firmly stuck in his ideology of "non-political"Only oversight is that they could have really underscored that decibels are a logarithmic scale and an increase of 3db is double the power emitted. https://time.com/6982015/bitcoin-mining-texas-health/

In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons. Funny how finance bureaucrats get all creative on budgets and the possibilities to circumvent them as soon as it is about buying guns, yet somehow this sort of creativity is impossible when it comes to high speed rail, affordable housing or energy transition. https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-eu-defense-fund-arms-investment-procurement/

"The plastic bag is a mundane consumer product. It consists of just one inexpensive material, intended to carry other, more important, items. It is one of those objects that becomes more visible when it is out of context. But the plastic bag easily ends up there, out of context, demanding our attention. This essay explores how the plastic bag became an iconic symbol of environmental degradation, with a special focus on Sweden, the very place where the bag was invented. By combining perspectives from marketing and new materialism, this essay deepens our understanding of how the plastic bag was institutionalised."https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/10.3828/whpeh.63861480327361#core-fn14-1#plastic #bag #sweden #history
