šŸ˜Ž Tooting my own horn again, but today, I - complete React and NextJS noob (kinda) - reviewed a small-but-mighty NextJS middleware change, found a bug, improved it, and then went and wrote tests for it too!Go me!!!(Actually very proud of myself today)

I get that you have to rebrand every now and then. I'm in the ā€œI’ll get used to it" camp. But really, the use of negative space in the new Nationwide logo is odd. My brain sees the "penguin of doom" more than the house.(For non-UK folks, this is the recent rebrand of a national organisation who are a member-owned financial organisation)

Back when we actually owned digital music (!!) we had specific devices for playing it.I kept my weenie little Zen Stone and I still think it’s a marvel. Those were the days.

Oh! I forgot to say. https://caniphp.com/ has an ā€œAPIā€ now. It’s just a static JSON version of the data. There’s no parameters of filters. But it might be useful if you want to build anything on top of the data. Please cache this if you use it. Thanks.https://caniphp.com/features.json#php

@simon @jasontucker I don’t get people saying WordPress is best for this. That requires so much infrastructure and tooling that could break or be hacked.Static HTML files are the way to go.But a domain for a large number of years. Hosting will come and go. AWS maybe? Very hard to say.

ā€œI’ve been doing this for YEARS and there’s hardly a week that goes by that I don’t learn about a new horrifying way to accidentally cause a breaking change… the rules are too complex, there’s too many of them, it’s too easy to break them without noticing … The real answer here is the tooling just need to be good.ā€Great Short from @changelog !https://youtube.com/shorts/_qd1zW8gxUU

I appreciate creativity, but I do find it odd that in WordPress I often see people using WordPress for things it really shouldn't be used for, and NOT using it for things it would be really good at. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

šŸ—’ļø Also good, from @sarah:ā€œDevelopers all love to hate legacy code. It’s ugly, and it’s gritty, and it’s hard to work with. But do you know the one thing it has going for it? Most of the time, whether it’s beautiful or not, it works. That’s right: legacy code in production is more valuable than the most beautiful, well-tested code sitting in a repository somewhere. It’s producing value today, rather than hope for tomorrow.ā€

Chatting with friends about productivity and managing work and tasks and I’m realising that I’ve settled on a really good system (for me).Must write about that.It involves Rocketbooks. Which I was initially very skeptical of.

I wrote this a while ago. I'm not sure I ended up happy with it. But I posted anyway."I recently read an excellent long-form article on enshittification that made me feel like quite the rebel being the person that actively avoids crappy free/cheap stuff. (And yes, I acknowledge my privilege) I can't stop thinking about it though. I want… I NEED… a simple, succinct version of some of it to send to people to TELL THEM that this is what's happening.ā€https://rosswintle.uk/2025/01/never-forgive-them-what-to-do-with-ed-zitrons-essay-on-the-rot-economy/

What are people's thoughts on Kagi search? Is it good? Do you happily pay for it? Are you concerned that some revenue goes to Yandex?I'm trying it out and wrestling with the moral implications. But that wrestling has also got me thinking about the fact that I happily give money to Google and Apple and is that any better these days? šŸ¤”

On the one hand I don’t want too much personal stuff on the internet. But on the other hand, I am a person. And it’s good to read the personal stuff of others. So here we go.It’s been a mixed week. My son played in his school piano festival (on a Ā£40,000 grand piano!) and did awesome. My daughter got her orange belt in taekwondo. Hooray! But today I spent a lot of time nursing a very sick girl and juggling the whole both-parents-working situation. Gah!!

Unsolicited Grumbles: Today I learned that if there's one thing worse than an auto-playing hero-section video, it's an auto-playing video that scrolljacks its way to full screen.No.Just, no.
