@relay@fedi-relay.gyptazy.com "app" is a psyop.1990s: "What's that piece of software? What does it do?"2020s: "Just install the app, derr!"

Is it mean to say that I find the snac web UI kind of confusing?I'm very confused. XDLike, I'm all on board the brutalism bandwagon, and I totally remember using chat websites pre-JS and all that.I just get lost with this UI. 🙃At least @tut@fosstodon.org works nicely as a client.enafore/orbitalfore, too.

@m3tti@functional.cafe...Wasn't it all about empowering us?It was when it was "Free Software.""Open Source" was always about wooing corporate dollars. And I'm not a big FSF fan, or anything, and I use the term "FOSS" mostly, which includes both terms. But starting nearly 30 years ago, the community started courting corporate interest and corporate dollars, and this is the end result.

@omar@bsd.cafeFrom [Wikipedia]:"It is a venture capital-funded tech startup—owned by founders, investors, and employees—with an obligation to make returns."That doesn't mean it's bad, but be wary. It may indeed be very good, but VC's mercenary ambitions always come home to roost, eventually. :/

@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk @fedops@fosstodon.orgReminds me of early Macintosh dither patterns, specifically, one of the 8x8 pixel "desktop wallpaper" patterns.

@m3tti@functional.cafeThe funny thing is that the corpos giveth, and the corpos taketh away...I started playing with Fedora KDE this year, because I needed a solid newbie Linux distro suggestion for a family member this year.Fedora is the Linux distro that would've made me drool 20 years ago. It is almost as polished as Linux can possibly be. It's not a perfect newbie distro, but man, it's close. But on the other side of that same coin, you have IBM and their frequent shenanigans in the FOSS world.Even 20 years ago, you have IBM pouring tons of very valuable code into Linux, taking it from hobby project to absolute Enterprise-class Unix juggernaut in one decade.But... they're still IBM. They're still horrible and mercenary.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#AndStatus does not like GoToSocial (and/or vice-versa), but it seems to like #snac just fine!

@evgandr@bsd.cafe @yoasif@mastodon.social @dillo@fosstodon.orghttps://old.reddit.com/ is actually somewhat usable with dillo.I think the best approach to surviving the current webpocalypse is to just forget about having "one browser to rule them all."Take a multi-vectored approach:Use a terminal browser like w3m, links, lynx, or chawan when doing some quick-and-dirty lookups, or when you don't feel like faffing about with a mouse at allUse #Dillo for blogs, #smolweb sites, and sites that you don't want eating your cpu if you load them in a full browserOptionally use #NetSurf for the few sites you know work better with itUse #Firefox with your own custom settings or a fork like #LibreWolf for things that really require full JS and that kind of thingUse a Blink-based browser like #Falkon or #UnGoogledChromium for the rare cases where a website just doesn't like firefoxI don't have dillo as my default browser on most of my systems now, but on all of my systems, I have one keystroke to open firefox or librewolf, and another to open dillo. A lot of times, I'll grab the url from @tut@fosstodon.org, launch dillo with a keystroke, and paste in the URL. If it doesn't work in dillo for some reason, or the formatting is too far off, it's easy enough just to fire up the old fox and paste in the url there. Here's a link to a toot where I discovered how to tweak the colors in dillo to be a bit more contrasty:https://polymaths.social/@rl_dane/statuses/01K3YBWR5XE7N781P9F7432VP7Here's a link to a toot with my keysrc file for more keyboard-friendly navigation (a little like qutebrowser or luakit, but only a little so far):https://polymaths.social/@rl_dane/statuses/01K3EQQ78KJG4E07KP74Y6Q0VEI also have firefox settings to disable AI available upon request. It's a bit of a faff to get it set up the first time, but then you're golden (for now ;)

@vermaden@bsd.cafeReminds me of when I do open *.pdf on my computer at work (open is a shell function that eventually calls xdg-open). It goes from nothing to having a dozen Zathura windows open at once.Feels like Star Trek, man. XD
