@futurebird Standard push button and rotary HVAC (and other critical systems) in vehicles are priceless. Don't have to look away from road to hunt and find a minute icon buried three levels deep in a menu, just to lower fan speed, etc.Think of pull-lever parking brake versus electo-button, or disappearance of key lock on passenger-side door. Gone. Because it's cheaper/easier for the manufacturer to produce. So so much foisted in the name of convenience is really only driven by cost-cutting.

@grickle Your artwork and humor are such a treasure, and never fail to light up my day. Here's hoping your day can be lightened, too.

@futurebird @Viss Reminds me of Perl Usenet in the early 90s: gate-keeping, soup-Nazis, dismissed if you posted from non-Unix device, etc. Sometimes helpful, mostly not.

@futurebird welp, giving a variant of this a try. No harm in that, prolly won't confuse my 2.1 followers one bit. Wanted "... 3 pikas yeeping" but ran into 30 character limit. Fun idea.

@futurebird @grammargirl poetry, for me, is so much tied to emotional response. A group of words, even a single word, brings to mind a whole gamut of feelings, thoughts and perceptions. All of which AI cannot have. It can only parrot the emotions others have told it of.It is similar to the effect a song has. If I hear the first few notes of a certain song, it engenders memories of a lovely little cat I had, who was taken away far too soon. Ten seconds = tears. What can AI analyze from that?

@futurebird Immigrant grandparents worked in factories ("button-maker", gloves, etc), vut one grandfather eventually farmed. Father worked for a time in factory and mill, although it was not his lifetime employment. Summer jobs for me.

@futurebird I've carried a pocketknife for most of my adult life. I have a variety, most of them are not really "self defense" items. I do have a few larger folding knives but I have nearly-never carried them. Ditto for sheath knife, as one looks a bit daft in polite society wearing one. But if solo hiking / camping deep in the boonies, just might have one at hand.IMHO the "tactical" fad is for people with issues, wanting to appear to be bad-ass.Says the guy who just revived his old iPod Nano

@futurebird @shafik I voted for the 3rd option. If I could die knowing I was as kind and loving as possible, and did as much as I could with the gifts I'd been handed in life, that'd be best. If somehow I could be reunited with loved ones and kitties OTRB, even better.

@futurebird I almost expected you to end it with "Thank you for your attention to this matter." (in all caps).

@futurebird Enjoyed the company of cats for decades and have never used the phrase in question. When our kitty buddies get upset like that, we call it "hoinking the dwindle-doo". Thought everybody did.

@stux The solid white lettering is better, if you want to convey info. A side interest of mine is very artistic signage in which the designer seems to forget that a sign (or banner?) is meant to provide certain information. That's it's 1st job, with looking cool or pretty being secondary. One can be fanciful and yet effectively message.

@futurebird Perhaps her routine is the one single moment of peace and sanity in an otherwise troubled turbulent existence? It might be in memory of a lost loved one from long ago? So many people, looking for just a tiny bit of comfort.

@futurebird I am reminded of "The Tea Ceremony", or other rituals in other cultures, where something normally thought of as mundane is elevated, because of a desire to make it special. 1/2

@futurebird @michael_w_busch I keep mine until the battery no longer holds a charge for day, "a day" being 16-18 hours. Since the advent of non-user-replaceable-batteries, that's my trigger. I take good care of my phones, so they tend to last. Aside from better botanical/small things photos, nothing touted nowadays as "must have feature" seduces me. Especially AI.

@futurebird I can imagine a group, doing or working on something together, and then one of them asks "Why are we doing this?". Which is quickly followed by "Oh, you idiot! Because we have always done this, this is what we do ..." And perhaps then it sinks in that "always doing" something is not necessarily the best rationale. There is "tradition", yes, but there's also repetitive duncery.

@futurebird I have a small group of batch files for various minor tasks, followed by (gasp) Perl stuff. And editing tools. And turning off all the user environment choices I chose not to have (despise is such a strong word). It doesn't truly become mine until I've loaded various chunks of software, though. Been doing this awhile (since 1981).

@lowqualityfacts Thank you for providing this scientific methodology. Apparently, with a BMI less than 3, I need more snacks 'n stuff.
