@simon I think I’d recommend getting your own domain name but paying for as many years ahead as is allowed. Then set a reminder to check a couple times a year to keep pushing that date out. Then if you have like an insane year or two and don’t check it you are still fine.

Every app wants to hide the top and bottom bars on scroll except the one situation where I'd actually want that: reading code in landscape.

The bigger the instances get the more need there is for something more fine grained than instance level blocks and more convenient than blocking individual accounts one at a time. If Threads and Tumblr ever get activity pub implemented this is going to be more and more evident.

This post probably has a lot of really cool stuff in the replies. I can't see any of them because I am on a tiny server.Does anyone know if there is anything on the roadmap to fix this or if this actually just considered a feature? https://peoplemaking.games/@eniko/110640667952027074

Given that Mastodon's whole thing is about federation and being in control of your own data it's pretty weird to me that the small instance experience is so much worse that being on one of the main ones.

Like oligarchy is indeed better than autocracy but it is not the best

Mona and some other clients will both create quote posts and render them properly. Not as good as system wide support but still an improvement. I believe proper support is on the roadmap though. @danilo https://hachyderm.io/@danilo/110810633050310373

The way I've come to see federation is that email and mastodon style federation is like an oligarchy. It's better than a dictatorship. It's good to have more than one guy calling the shots. But I'd like to be in a federated system that's more like a democracy. I'd like a system where my identity and experience are controlled entirely by me and not a small number of aristocrats that control everything.

In order for that to happen I think we need the following:1. It needs to be easy to self host a small instance with a minimal number of resources.2. The experience on a small instance needs to be on par with the big instances. For example you should be able to see the same replies to posts.

I actually think that mastodon will get there but right now it doesn't seem like they are that interested in democratizing control of the system beyond how it currently works.

There really should be criminal charges for executives when something like this happens. https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111409362437931494
