Here's the project I"m talking about:http://rezmason.github.io/wireworld-playerIt's a cellular automata, like Conway's Life, but restricted to wires; someone designed this programmable computer in it; I'm porting my old Flash app to vanilla JS to run it.The thing is, there's many different ways to program this. So I could make a video or live stream session for each one.

The basic version goes over every pixel and updates them. A smarter version only updates the ones that can change. A smarter version only updates the ones that are neighbors of ones that just changed. Then there's the GPU accelerated ones, and then I'll try to make one built on top of Bill Gosper's "HashLife" algorithm. On top of that is the question about how to move them off the main thread, and how to profile them to perform comparisons. So there's plenty of subject matter presumably

#theJunkDrawerFound a $1 Lego-like construction set. Sydney Opera House, it says! Lego's sells for $190, so this is a massive bargain.Had to mod one piece, though, otherwise it wouldn't actually fit together right

SCOTUS has ruled that Google's copying of Java SE APIs was fair use. Hashtag let's go, I'm curious what this means for software freedom and preservation.Sorry for a PDF link:https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/20pdf/18-956_d18f.pdfMy favorite part so far: "Computer programs differ to some extent from many other copyrightable works because computer programs always serve a functional purpose."🤣🤣🤣 It's all purposeful, folks! Reading this <24hrs after Revision 2021 is icing on the cake 🍰

@dogstar This reminds me of multichannel SDF textures (often used for game fonts):

#theWorkshop This was an adventure and a hassle.I've just written a tiny C program for Win32 that reports the current 256-color system palette. This is useful for extracting the color palettes of old palette-based programs.I'm so far out of my wheelhouse it's eerie. I feel like I'm standing in a bog at midnight with a radio receiver, recording the signal of a numbers station. Real what-the-hell-am-I-doing-out-here energy.

Western Electric physically cutting hundreds of bundles of cables in 47 seconds in the mid eighties. This is to switch off a phone system as instantly as possible, before anyone might call in.Why is this so satisfying to me?https://youtu.be/yt9QgV22A_Q

@neauoire I think my school curriculum stopped our reading of Farenheit 451 just short of the attack on the city. 🤯 This is the first I've heard of it! The irony is not lost on me!

@amolith @rysiek @mansr Does this ruling mean CDNs violate GDPR, or did Google or the defendants do something more particular that violated it?

@neauoire I argued recently that the companies and movements we call "tech" aren't even technology, ie. the application of the arts and sciences to the analysis of problems and their solutions. Most of what these firms do is excite people about something they offer, and then convince them that it solves a preexisting problem before the novelty dies. Once they enter the phase where they work out how to make money off the lie, people keep using the technique in fear of a problem they *never had*.

Just reached email Inbox Zero after years of practically ignoring it. I feel unburdened.I think I've now got what it takes to finally cast off Twitter and Facebook in one go.

Facebook finally deactivated! Not just ignored, deactivated! Twitter's next. I'll probably spend some time tomorrow parsing my archive, filtering my follow list and turning it into an addition to my links page. It's kind of silly that the first links on my links page are derived from the social network exodus, but I'll expand and curate it more once I've reclaimed my sweet time from the hellsites.Let's uxning goooooo

@HSTG Mm. Dear self appointed Fedi defense league,My account is years old, and is on an instance maintained by a community I respect and am grateful for. One of our aims is to master our own time/resources/Internet presence, so our relationships with social networks are a relevant topic of discussion.I am not here to recreate my experience on other platforms. I am a platform skeptic. Please don't proselytize to me about how to use this, another platform.Yours,Rezmason

@neauoire This is a good guess, but I don't believe this is the answer. The textbook in question has diagrams of polygons whose interior angles are represented by ratios of multiples of the side lengths. I've found zero examples so far, and it doesn't especially sound up Lockhart's alley.

@neauoire Palm's Jeff Hawkins uses it as an example in his book On Intelligence as a system that others used neural networks to implement. Palm obviously didn't, and their implementation proved to be simpler and more dependable.
