A phone call out of the blue tonight. The person who sold to me my '95 Ford F-150 XLT pickup 6 years ago heard I was selling the truck, wanted it back, willing to pay high book price for it. Cash on delivery to his business location. I've been struggling on whether to sell or not for some time. I love it, but it's the length of a football field and gets barely 10 mpg on the highway. So I'm excited. I'm sad. But I'm excited! And I'm sad. (sigh)

@daniel Heh. Good idea. But I'm old fashioned. I always keep a bar of gold bullion in the glove, for those special emergencies.

@ericbuijs Good for you, Eric! My Samsung laptop is a dual-core AMD with build-in GPU. Not a fast one in my network. When I added an SSD drive, it's performance compared well to my older quad-core workstations and server running mechanical HDDs. If you want to kick that PB into hyperdrive, consider putting in an SSD.MX Linux will do well on 2 cores. If the CPU is less than 10 yrs old, activate the 'ahs' repository, which will give the 5.x kernels and newer system files.

@ericbuijs It doesn't necessarily. If you have any newer accessories attached or within the PC, they may benefit from the 5.x series. Added on newer video graphics cards may benefit. If for no other reason than to be sure you have the most bug-free, security patched version. Now, after all that, if your PC is stock and 10 or more years old, try the 4.x series and see how it works for you. You can go either way, keeping the 'ahs' repo active even with the older kernel in use.

If for no other reason than to be sure you have the most bug-free, security patched version.Since your PC is around 8 years old, I'd still go with the 5.x series kernel. You can always switch to the 4.x if you have problems. and keep the 'ahs' repo active, regardless.

@ericbuijs Why not run a Linux distro on it? And doesn't someone put out a UNIX distro that runs on a Mac? this could be one fun tinker 'puter if you are interested in exploring operating systems. If I had it, that's what I would do.@normandc

@ericbuijs A Mac user that knows how to get around the operating system intimately is a better candidate for running GNU/Linux than one who is a well verse in Windows. Many Mac users today are clueless of the sisterhood that exists between the two platforms. Other than the difference in keyboard configuration and lack of BIOS, and with Macs using the Intel CPU, there is no discernible difference in running Linux on a Mac over an IBM compatible.@normandc

@ericbuijs I should mention, too, that you don't need to contribute to download elementary Linux. Enter a zero for now. If you like it and want to continue on, you can always go back and contribute. @normandc

@ericbuijs You can kick MacOS X to the curb. You don't need to dual-boot. Check the page on the site that shows you how to install.@normandc

@ericbuijs Also...you should be able to boot to a LIVE disc with elementary, give both of you a chance to test it out before committing to an install.@normandc

@ericbuijs Just remembered. The last time I ran a Linux distro on an Mac was when I had a 2008 MacBook. Thnat would have been about 5-7 years ago. Completely wiped MacOS X off. No problems. Of course, with more development for the Mac these days, it should be even easier to one up and running with a Linux distro.@normandc

@ericbuijs Good to hear. I thought she would like elementary. The developers' goal is to make the desktop look like MacOS X on Linux. @normandc

@nvi That's great. Good for you both. My youngest lives across the state. Between her work and COVID running high in her city, it will be a while before we can join up for a ride. Hopefully before the this riding season ends.@tk @bicycling @mastobikes

@tk Agreed. A little stenciling, or airbrushing from an talented individual. Monogrammed with your name would be cool. Any of these would look great on a black stem. Hit it with a few coats of urethane clear. 👍

@tk Yep. Black anodized aluminum. They can anodize in a myriad of colors today. You can also do the anodizing yourself, on non-anodized aluminum. Not that difficult at all.@awlt @slowfallinward

@tk @awlt Looks good. How do you like having the front rack clamped onto the stem? This is the first I've seen this type of mount. I'm not keen on it, a no-no on my Miyata, because I have the stem up to its limit out of the steering/fork tube. I would be inviting sway and eventual cracking of the stem from the stresses caused by a heavy front pack. Of course, this is just my situation.@bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward

@tk @awlt Since I can't see where the assembly ends up, am I right in assuming the other end connects to the front rack? Or, is this backstop/hanger for a handlebar bag?@bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward

PLA isn't the right material, being too soft. I broke one off the first print, but that was partly because of the need to clean up the pins before inserting. Once the workshop warms up I'll try a print with ABS. For now, a working keyboard.2/2#3dprinting #creality #tinkercad
