@futurebird @hal_pomeranz You should be able to set up a network that doesn't require any external connections. Don't even worry about getting name service up. Put everything in one subnet using net 10 and use IP addresses for everything. "http://10.0.0.1/lessions" on a raspberry pi.

@Seanochicago @futurebird @Anke @wmd I'm talking about how you teach the technology. If you're going to teach the technology of networks you need to start with 1+1=2, not "you use Math to build a dam!".

@Seanochicago @futurebird @Anke @wmd I'm talking about what you cover in a course on computers, not what you put in a Little Golden Book.

@futurebird @Seanochicago @Anke @wmd My daughter was under 10 when I explained packet switching to her, I'm not talking about explaining IP headers and flags and TCP being wrapped around IP and all of that I'm just talking about the basic concept that the network operates by sending little packets that are just fragments of information that travel independently. It can be explained to a child in 10 minutes and so much of the rest of networking depends on it.

@khinsen If you can't identify why you're getting different results on different versions of Debian that means your understanding of your code or the problem is incomplete and you should resolve that before publishing.

@khinsen I think this should be classified with all the rat studies that haven't corrected for what rats are really capable of.This guy actually did a study on what it took to keep rats from using external cues to run mazes and it involved freshly sterilized floors for each run to eliminate odor clues, building the maze on a sand table so vibrations didn't cue them in, and so on.

@davidgerard I am reminded of the time they invited a bunch of us Palm users to a thing on the Microsoft campus, to sell us on the Pocket PC (Windows Mobile). The first thing we did when we arrived at the campus was we all pulled out our Palms and exchanged contact information using beaming. Pocket PC also supported beaming so every time we met a new Microsoft developer we asked to exchange contact info and EVERY SINGLE ONE replied that their Pocket PC was back in their desk drawer.

@tomjennings I did some work on a CROMIXsystem. It was kind of a multiprocessor sideways cousin of MP/M with a UNIX-style file system and it supported both a UNIX-style and a CP/M style API. We developed with the Microsoft C80/M80/L80 toolchain using VMS style symbolic assignments to accommodate the CP/M use of "/" as a flag separator.

@tomjennings Yeh, it put the floppies at /a and /b and when you called (say) l80 you did something like:assign L /lib/crt/whateverassign I /usr/includeAnd then told l80 that libs were on L: and includes were on I: so it didn't have to deal with filenames containing "/".
