@ramsey Well, 1. some commons don't allow commercial use at all, and many of those still get sucked into models regardless, which is a problem and 2. In either case, *individuals* are still making the art into derivative works; creativity and purpose is required. In the case of AI, nobody is making the derivative works. Art is an ingredient, and not a very important one. It's not contributing to any sort of creative process or furthering a conversation. It's an abrogation of intention.

@skobkin What does "intention" mean to you when you act, and when you interact with others? @ramsey

"When I tell it it's wrong, ChatGPT tries again and gets more correct!"No. It learns which answer you stopped asking questions at. It has no idea of correct factually!Correct for ChatGPT means *you are satisfied* with the combo of words it put together. That you liked its information-shaped sentence. That's all. If you tell it it's still wrong, it will try again with different words instead. You just think it's getting more right because you let it stop when it accidentally is.

Of course, that's assuming the person asking already knows the correct answer. If they don't...Well. Then it learns the wrong things about the status of its information-shaped sentences.

@deonandan I read somewhere that the effort required to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude higher than the effort required to produce it.

Targeted property crime only -- sabotage, but no loss of life, to protest encroachment into their territories. Honestly, look, that's excellent whale praxis. "It didn't take them that long to destroy both rudders. Looks like they knew exactly what they are doing. They didn't touch anything else."https://www.newsweek.com/orcas-filmed-destroying-ship-rudder-shocking-clip-surrounded-1805644

@mischievoustomato Why? And what would an alternative be, features wise? What information or community conversation can't move elsewhere, albeit in a different form? Is it because of the search, the threads, what?@christianselig @EshuMarneedi @socialjeffwarrior

@murshedz First Rule of Bullshit: it takes a magnitude more effort to refute it than it does to sling it. Second Rule: refuting it is useless; if they cared about facts they wouldn't be slinging bullshit.

The implosion of Reddit and slow death of Twitter is fascinating. Us olds had an adage at the dawn of the internet age: "if you're not paying, you aren't the audience."LLMs like ChatGPT sucking up everyone's content I think has deeply impacted how people see these communities and their contributions to them. They aren't benign now. And when users see themselves being taken for granted... they don't like it. And they're realizing that don't have to put up with it, either.

@Grandalf The same PR companies that kept cigarettes from being regulated against for *decades* as people died did this.Could scicomm be better? Always. COVID showed us how difficult it is to convey complex topics during a time of changing consensus -- generally called "learning stuff" but spun as being liars or equivocators. But there was an organized campaign to discredit and marginalize anyone taking climate change seriously. And the press ...utterly failed.@luckytran

Ok friends I need you to listen closely:Elon Musk doubling down and compounding his bad decisions is NORMAL. This is how rich assholes behave. This is how they ALL behave. We're going into a climate crisis. One that requires immediate action. We have unprecedentedly unchecked corporate power structures and an elite that has zero understanding. And they will make WORSE decisions the more they are pressed. The rich will destroy the world rather than admit they don't know what they're doing.

But Musk is trashing his own PR machine, you say? Why would he do that?Because it's his to destroy. Does that hurt him, in the end? Yes. But the ego threat it represents when independent is too much for him to cope with. And he is ultimately insulated from any material harms -- he's still rich, and now you have no Twitter. The billionaires have to live on earth too, you say? They would rather destroy it for everyone else rather than cede control, even to people better qualified or equipped.

So like what's Musk's thing about the letter X? Used to be that was a secret Christian hand-shake when you put it in your business names. Is he secretly a bible thumper? (Please boost this conspiracy theory because it'll piss weird nerds AND fundies off and it's a rare Venn diagram that gets both at the same time)
