For the first time in weeks, I was able to start prepping my weekend to-do list by archiving about a dozen items. That felt good.Topping it back up with new stuff.

The Raspi synthesizer is an interesting thing. It's a virtual analog synth running on the Pi's bare metal and if I like it I might just look for another Pi if this full self-hosting thing works out. I can't have the synth and the hosting service running on the same time because of the bare-metal thing.https://github.com/rsta2/minisynth/releasesThat second pi could then be home to multiple bare-metal instruments simply by swapping out the MicroSD card.

@Aurochs I found it while looking for another thing that I'd heard about but didn't note the location of: an organ that also runs on bare metal without a full OS. I still haven't found that but once I have, it'll be easy to have that on a MicroSD card as well. Then I could maybe get something like this combo: https://www.marktplaats.nl/v/hobby-en-vrije-tijd/elektronica-componenten/m1842159753-raspberry-pi-7-inch-touch-screen-display-rpi-3-32gb-sd and have a portable set of keyboard instruments for the home in Portugal.

@Aurochs Yes! Spouse finalized the purchase last month and spent 3 weeks there getting things in order.

Today’s session/exercise. It’s all about the effects this time, trying to make a Pocket Operator sound bigger. This is for practice and developing a full arrangement that I hope to complete over the weekend. It’s unlikely I will record anything tonight.

Over the years I've become slightly less crap at finding the key of a song while playing along with it. But I didn't cross hat vital not-useless threshold until I started playing bass guitar every day.

Question for younger millennials and older Gen Z (thinking born between 1992 and 2002): would you say that you had a lot of leisure time when you were kids? #askfedi

@adamasnemesis Having had plenty of leisure seems to have been the pattern, which kind of surprises me because that was the time I first started reading about kids drowning in extracurricular activities. How about electronics (anything from TV, video games, social media and messaging to coding but not creating art or music on a computer)?

I can't help thinking that the money spigot for the whole tech industry has finally been turned off causing all those corporations to scramble to monetize at the same time.

Can you think of something that you own that - is not furniture, white goods or other items that you'd consider part of your home; and- that you're reasonably sure you've used more than 5000 times? That's equivalent to using it every day for almost 14 years, by the way.

I can think of one thing: this plain green lunchbox my parents got me in 1983. I still use it when I go to the office.

It's about the most mundane object you can image. It's not beautiful though its current weathered state has a certain appeal. It's certainly not going to stand out as my favorite possession or something I even think about much, but here it is, doing its job for almost 40 years.

Candidate number 2 is a pair of speakers I've had for almost 30 years and used intensively for the first 15 years of those. They are not great speakers but they've survived some rough treatment including use as a makeshift PA system for small live performances. After 2010, I've not used them so much. But those are a story for a different thread.Robustness is not a trait that audio lovers talk about much, but these otherwise mediocre things have it.

Talk about moving fast and breaking things! But breaking things for a good reason: mastodon.social and mastodon.online are now on 'silence' on mastodon.art because of glaring omissions in the execution of their moderation/defederation policies.Explanation from the admin of mastodon.art here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/silencing-social-74474015[continues]

What this is not: 1. "Silencing" as conventionally understood. Look at the post for details.2. Defederation. I talked about that earlier, but it's not happening now.3. Any kind of punishment or retaliation against those instances. That's not the point of this, as I understand it. Rather, it's a consequence of those instances not having their shit together and not adequately protecting users. This means other instances have to do the protecting.

From the big megathread of ways that Twitter could fail in the near future (which I can't find right now but you may have seen it), one takeaway that's scary for the Fediverse is that they identified three different things that were needed for effective moderation: 1. The moderation teams themselves;2. Technology for moderation, i.e. tools the moderation teams could use;3. Professional mental support for the mods/admins because they'll see some shit they can't unsee.

Twitter had some of these things in place pre-Elon, but not nearly enough of them. The Fediverse? We're still stuck on point 1 and we're not paying those mods. We can't have a good moderation infrastructure until we have 2 and 3 in place. There are probably also opportunities here, though. The traditional tools of social media sites are not that good and don't help the mental health of mods - they arguably make that worse.

I think the tools are mainly focused on automatically identifying content that needs to be removed? And that's obviously necessary considering both the volume and severity of infringing content out there. But do things like a timeout tool for mods exist? Where if a mod sees something extremely bad and needs to take a breather, they can just say a phrase and tap out for as long as they need? (This came from thinking about it last night while walking the dog. Dunno if it'd work)

Developing some serious second thoughts about letting the house go cold this winter. It’s not even December but for a number of reasons, the whole thing seems to be self-defeating and harmful to Spouse and myself.
