@LOW_IQ @alex I've mouth kissed a boy before! It was only a couple of seconds, but it didn't suck.Alex is my almost role model!I mean, I barely pay attention to what the hell he posts, but he is vegan, so it's nice to have him on my timeline.

Anyone have an opinion on Syncthing? I just installed it, and it seems like the holy grail of file sharing that I have been looking for. Before I had looked at NextCloud, and although is is awesome, the setup looked very involved, and instructions for a home server was sparse. Native app on linux didn't help.Unfortunately, there is no iOS client, which is what I wanted it for. Sending files directly to iPad is impossible without an Apple device. Fortunately, OTG with Files works well.

@onan Oooh. I read about VLC being able to handle basically any file format, but never investigated it.I basically use my iPad as a PDF reader.I've been eyeing some fancy ereaders from Boox and Onyx, but they are expensive, and tend to be locked down.New ones have color though!

@vidak Yeah, I think that was the first time I saw a head implode. The lore is gave was really interesting. Like, the future of that world has the conflict eventually resolved, and all religions are collapsed and manifested into a database goddess. The fact that there are humans who have travelled to safe spots on the internet is cool. Also, that the matrix universe is lot stranger, and anachronisms are a lot more common.Love, Death and Robots has a similar feel.

Fuck Apple. From now on I wil never use a product from them again.I would explain the very recent catalyst, but the main thing is that is has a very broken security system model that is fucking hostile to its users. So, I am getting giving rid of the iPad Pro and regular iPad I have. Well, giving it back to my mother who somehow keeps acquiring these things. If I can, I will delete the account I have. It is the shittiest ecosystem to sink any cost in.Fuck Apple.

Anyone have an recommendations for a tablet?Android has a similar problem to iPad, as in Google is a company I hate to interact with, but they at least can be circumvented.I am looking for something decent at ten inches and larger.I mostly want it to read PDFs. Textbooks, journal articles, scientific papers, stuff that is best represented on a large screen.I will consider any brand, except Samsung. The most control I can acquire, using Linux or rooting, the better.

Does it make sense to perhaps get a tablet made for Windows, and install some touch-friendly version of Linux? How well supported are these kind of devices? Those seem to have more options and ports, and are generally more powerful than any Android tablet I would consider. The only downside I can think of is lower resolution and poor power management.

@selea I thought about that, and I still may consider it. However, I really want a tablet. Any keyboard would need to be detachable. Plus, Yoga line are laptops, and are a lot more expensive than my use case.Yet, Android will always be more limited, and ultimately those devices will become garbage when they stop receiving updates and the OS cannot be replaced.Damn, maybe I have a lot more to consider than I realized.

@vidak Hard Drives fail in a predictable way, which makes it easy to catch and backup. Also, they are vastly cheaper for the amount of storage you can get, which makes redundancy affordable.

There is no comfortable way to read a book.On a table you are craning your neck down.In a chair you have to hold the book up, which gets fatiguing.Even with a book holder, you have to fiddle with arm springs everytime you turn a page.Sitting itself is bad for a long time. The only sane way to read is lying on your bed, propped up with pillows, book on your chest. This is a must, especially with large format books.

@TFG @vidak @brad Use case definitely matters. I don't really amass a ton of digital stuff. No videos. Mostly PDF files.I suppose if I started backing uo my game collection from GOG and Itch.io, I would definitely hit my limits.I can certainly live off SSDs, and the speed does matter.I guess for archiving a lot of data, hard drives are still the most cost effective.

Of course, watching stuff or playing games should be a priority. I rather be more focused in my life, making things, exploring, gaining knowledge and skills. It is weird to complain about my media consumption, but I know I am missing out on experiences that are available to me, that are a lot more gratifying than most films. It also exposes an obvious laziness. Games take effort, often require critical thinking, and can really sharpen my resolve to keep trying after failure.

@deeski Good choice on MX Linux. The best hardware for linux is the one you already got.Windows machine? Put linux on it.Apple computer? It is a pain in the ass. You can still put linux on it though.

@jawsh Wow. I have a similar elephant I've been trying to catch for years, but I've hardly done the work to systematically look for it.I have a memory of what I think is an NES game where the spaceship descends from the outside into an underground cave. It is horizontal shooterIt looked very cool, and I want to play it. Guess I will have to look for it now.
