A small pilot study finds that a ketogenic diet leads to improvements in both mental health and metabolic health among people experiencing side effects from medication for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: https://www.psypost.org/keto-diet-may-improve-metabolic-and-mental-health-symptoms-in-psychiatric-patients/#Science #Biology #Health #MentalHealth #Keto #Diet #Schizophrenia #Bipolar

Following a diet high in saturated fat, the gut microbiome was altered, gene expression in the brain changed, and anxiety increased:https://www.sciencealert.com/eating-a-high-fat-diet-may-increase-your-anxiety-study-warns#Science #Health #Diet #GutMicrobiome #Anxiety #MentalHealth

@futurebird That's interesting speculation about insect brain efficiency and scaling. Birds also seem to have more efficient brains than mammals, with corvids having intelligence equivalent to great apes. If that scaled with body size, ostriches would be geniuses. But it doesn't necessarily: ostriches are 46 times larger than crows but their brains are only 5.7 times larger (from https://sizegraf.com/blog/list-of-brain-weights-for-animals/). So bigger ants might not be a lot smarter.

Evaluation of dietary factors and colon cancer incidence in more than 500,000 women over a period of 16 years found the strongest positive association (i.e., more cancer) with alcohol and the strongest negative association with calcium (primarily from dairy products except for cheese and ice cream).https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-55219-5#Science #Health #Cancer #ColonCancer #Diet #Alcohol #Calcium #Milk #Dairy

The fatty acid pentadecanoic acid appears to decrease some effects of aging through multiple metabolic pathways.https://www.iflscience.com/could-this-molecule-be-the-answer-to-growing-old-gracefully-79328Note that this is a sponsored article, and ends with a plug for a book (which in turn evidently plugs a supplement supplier). But the summary article references studies that may provide some credibility to the claims.#Aging #Diet #PentadecanoicAcid
