. @ParadeGrotesque This is Mastodon. These messages do not exceed the threshold necessary to be defined as "noise".

Why do news reports start with the name of the city the reporter is in? Is there some value to this tradition, or is it just a holdover from before communication was instant?

Bad press for Twitter. But this is mostly public data anyway. Twitter sold data to Cambridge Analytica; data sales account for 13% of revenue - http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9to5Google/~3/NSAz_MdJd2E/

It's like somebody took a page from gnu.org and replaced the text "emacs" with "WordPerfect for DOS".

@ParadeGrotesque honestly, if a recruiter is looking at certs to determine employment eligibility, think really hard about how much they value your individual skills, diversity of thought, and inclusion in general. My opinion, certs are a way to exclude people rather than actually check if you know anything beyond some lowest common denominator. You're better served doing something that demonstrates skill and passion such as joining a CTF team or contributing to an open source project.

@ParadeGrotesque the best way to say FU to corporate security is to find a good job that judges candidates bases on their skills and passion (and doesn't require certs) and let corporate security fail under its own incompetence.

@Ricardus @venya agreed. It smells like the kind of "let's throw pancakes at the wall to seek what sticks" kind of performance optimization frequent with people new to a problem domain attempting to help. My gut tells me that the most recent day or 5 of data is "hot" and the older, "cooler" data could be organized differently to improve performance. Deleting that old data will free up disk space though.Twitter had a whole thing about this actuallyhttps://blog.twitter.com/engineering/en_us/topics/infrastructure/2021/processing-billions-of-events-in-real-time-at-twitter-

@SDF This is $$$ in upgrades to support #Mastodon at #SDF. It's supported almost entirely through donations. If you use SDF (or appreciate the content coming out of SDF) consider throwing them a much needed donation!

@Ricardus @HunterZ @ParadeGrotesque but when I tap on the "2 followers" in Tusky, I see a LOT more in the list. It's seems like something summary data needs to be reconstructed and its possible some of it can still be recovered.

Every time I read a think-piece about what's wrong with Mastodon, it seems to me that the author is examining things that could go wrong with a federated network but forgets that none of those problems exist in a 40-ish year old federated messaging platform we all already use, e-mail.
