@CKsTechNews I'm on an ancient version of Windows 7 and have been rolling along fine for ages. These screens. Oh wow, when was the last time Microsoft's technical support did anything. Never. When did they last give a useful software update for a released version, in the far remote past.Security updates might be a thing if they weren't all for pretend non-issues and packaged together with more telemetry and nagvertising. There's one for-serious security issue that's been found in 7 since it was depreciated, and Microsoft pushed out a KB fix for it. But that was an actual for-real security threat.

@Tilopa So it's basically an admission then?

@slashdot This seems false. It's not accessible, they haven't added anything.

@nkizz @same Exactly. 99% of security issues are a fantasy. No one's running timing attacks on a desktop running Skyrim.

@itsecbot A guest essay by the CEO of an organization that sells passwordless authentication. Isn't that just called a sales pitch?

@moralrecordings @retronianne Yeah, now I just roll my eyes at these greenwashing efforts. It's all "we use ugly packaging for the environment ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ", no mention of the illegal dumping from their waste plants or the massive tire fire they keep burning 24/7 to ward off spying drones from the competition.I exaggerate, but probably not by that much.

@tomjennings Yeah, I don't really see the problem with this. The writers of "Talk To Jesus AI" aren't breaking any laws and are pretty clear no actual religious advisors are involved at all. The project is just what it says on the box.

@ParadeGrotesque Don't worry, I'm already on the paranoia train about this.

@bastardsheep @randahl @ghost_shit Also, I don't understand why Elon cares about the border, like, what's it to him? I think he only cares because it's pandering, which actually mystifies me even more that he's not pro Ukraine. This is someone who really wants to be a popular figure for the right wingers because he sees how much attention people like Jordan Peterson get, and he knows he won't get that kind of love from left leaning supporters.

@crazyeddie @scherzog @lina The worst part is that in benchmarks, Rust beats out C++ and is only very slightly slower than C (by 7%), but would probably be more secure and more reliable in practice. It might also be faster than C in production since it can better optimize itself.

@Archivist @crazyeddie @scherzog @lina I dug around for the article so I could reference it and I've linked it here.https://thenewstack.io/which-programming-languages-use-the-least-electricity/Their tests might be a bit simplistic, but even in more complex tests, Rust might be able to optimize more heavily in situations where C wouldn't be able to.

@internetarchive The idea of "lending" ebooks was always a bit strange. Especially as "Print on Demand" is becoming cheaper.

@SuperDicq The Fandom wiki does seem to be something of a blight. Even when they're empty they crowd the search results, they're filled with ads, they're wayy to slow even while empty. Just awful in every way.

@kaia I did some searching on the internet, but the only link I found is this one "https://gizmodo.com/that-viral-photo-of-roundmeal-macaroni-and-beef-product-1846980589" which refers to the Henton's images we're seeing here, and they're apparently Photoshopped by "Alan Wagner".

@kaia I looked it up because I wanted to try one. It does look kind of tempting as a bread-thing.

@wolf480pl @eta Oh wow, my condolences. I was thinking that every single time I've tried to work with the "advanced" devops services, I ran into time consuming and expensive issues that were always much worse than if I'd just run everything on a VPS and pushed out code with SFTP.

@N33R Now I'm really curious which online videogames appeal to someone who used to run a country.EDIT: I'm also really curious if he's any good or not.EDIT2: Is it strange that I have more respect for someone who's willing to take his money and just chill out instead of buying a social media company or trying to get into politics or something else?

@ricci That was my takeaway from all this as well. Every additional redundancy also seems to add a new single point of failure to manage it, so your cost goes up, but your effective reliability does not.The only way a system would be actually redundant would be if the protocol was something like bittorrent, where your servers operate completely independently and don't need a central point to route users between them.
